Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Death to Life: Discourses on St. Paul's Great Resurrection Chapter The testimonies I have received as to the practical usefulness of these expositions of St. Paul's teachings on the Resurrection have been so many and from persons of such varied experiences and opinions, that I am disposed to congratulate myself upon yielding to the judgments of friends who persuaded me to put them into print. A clergyman of ninety years of age writes me In my long life I have read variously on this great theme. Nothing has so illumined the evening of my life as this book of yours. An agnostic confesses to being agnostic no longer. Bereaved fathers and mothers have conveyed their thanks for new courage and hope. Into the hands of several appointed to die friends have put the book; and the testi mony from dying lips as to its helpfulness has been sacredly delightful. While, if I were treating the theme de now, I should be disposed to do it somewhat differently, yet it is so satisfactory to know that the book has had a mission to hearts that specially needed its truth, that I commend it once again in its original form to the benediction of Him who is the Resurrection and the Life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Socinianism was at the height of its power, Andrew Fuller challenged it in its self-professed point of greatest strength --the virtue encouraged by its principles of theistic rationality. Do the extended implications of its principles compare favorably with Calvinism in the development of virtue? Using their own writings and the admissions they make concerning piety and virtue among Socinians, Fuller compared both systems in their tendency to convert profligates to a life of holiness, to convert professed unbelievers, their development of a standard of morality, to encourage love to God, candor and benevolence toward men, encourage humility and charity, promote love for Christ and veneration of Scripture, develop happiness, cheerfulness, gratitude, obedience, and heavenly-mindedness in the followers of the respective systems. If challenged that he is being judgmental and has focused on subjective criteria, Fuller replied that he is merely engaging the Socinians at the place where they have invited investigation. Fuller intended to lay bare the emptiness of the Socinian boast to virtue. The work first was published in 1793.

Constituted as man is, he will fight no battle simply from sentiment or feeling. He must believe that there is something worth fighting for. In every one of us, the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary, the one to the other. This world was intended to be a battleground. "I came not to send peace, but a sword." Depressing and discouraging words unless there be something beyond! Everything on earth is lent us. Nothing really becomes ours till we have done battle for it. The earth and the heavens are full of knowledge, but we have to learn it. The only way in which we can make it our own is to struggle with it. Like Jacob of old, when he met the angel and had to wrestle for the blessing, so it is with ourselves. Everything external has to become internal. The fact without has to become the thought and feeling within before it is ours. Before this earth could be what it is, it had to be melted by fire, drenched by rains, swathed in fogs impenetrable by light. All this agony had to be endured. Before that bright spring morning which wakes up every bird, and excites every fragrance, and unfolds every leaf, could come or be possible, all that scorching fire, and drenching rain, and impenetrable fog had to be. Before you and your friends could meet around the parlor fire, and enjoy each other's society, the Creator had to make the coal whose red warmth casts its glow on your visage. Create it? What does that word mean? How much? Begin at the beginning and trace the geologic formation of our common coal from the time it was vapor till through endless ages it became forest, died into its unvitalized condition, and became hard as stone; then you will know what the word...
