Book A Discourse of the Grounds and Reasons of the Christian Religion 1724

Download or read book A Discourse of the Grounds and Reasons of the Christian Religion 1724 written by Anthony Collins and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collins' 'Discourse of the Grounds and Reasons of the Christian Religion' was at the center of controversies between early eighteenth-century English Deists and their orthodox Christian opponents. In 1722 William Whiston, while defending the old confessional position, admitted that most citations of the Old Testament in the New go well beyond the literal sense when they appealed to prophecies fulfilled by Jesus Christ. Whiston attempted to solve this problem by blaming it on Jews who had amended the original text of the Old Testament. In this volume Collins uses Whiston's proposal as a foil. While Collins could easily make a mockery of Whiston's suggestion that Jews amended the text, he seized upon Whiston's concession that the New Testament consistently depends upon nonliteral interpretations in appeals to messianic fulfillment. Collins points out that if New Testament writers depended upon nonliteral interpretations, then their interpretative techniques contradicted the classical Christian norm of the literal sense as the only basis for arguments about doctrine and failed to make any compelling historical case for prophetic doctrine. In other words, if Old Testament prophecy is allegorical in nature, then it can't be used to furnish any real truth of an event. This volume proved to be quite controversial, calling forth no less than thirty-five replies in two years.

Book Catalogues of Books

Download or read book Catalogues of Books written by Jonathan Edwards and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final volume in The Works of Jonathan Edwards publishes for the first time Edwards’ “Catalogue,” a notebook he kept of books of interest, especially titles he hoped to acquire, and entries from his “Account Book,” a ledger in which he noted books loaned to family, parishioners, and fellow clergy. These two records, along with several shorter documents presented in the volume, illuminate Edwards’ own mental universe while also providing a remarkable window into the wider intellectual and print cultures of the eighteenth-century British Atlantic. An extensive critical introduction places Edwards’ book lists in the contexts that shaped his reading agenda, and the result is the most comprehensive treatment yet of his reading and of the fascinating peculiarities of his time and place.

Download or read book Habermas written by David Ingram and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of Jürgen Habermas (b. 1929) has been highly influential both in philosophy and across many disciplines in the social sciences. David Ingram here provides an accessible introduction to Habermas's complex thought as it has evolved from 1953 to the present, spanning philosophy, religion, political science, social science, and law. One of today's most intriguing thinkers, Habermas is also notably prolific; for students and other readers who wish to navigate the philosopher's more than thirty books, the lucid and precise Habermas: Introduction and Analysis is a welcome starting point rich in insights. Ingram's book addresses the entire range of Habermas's social theory, including his most recent and widely discussed contributions to religion, freedom and determinism, global democracy, and the consolidation of the European Union. Recognizing Habermas's position as a highly public intellectual, Ingram discusses how Habermas applies his own theory to pressing problems such as abortion, terrorism, genetic engineering, immigration, multiculturalism, separation of religion and state, technology and mass media, feminism, and human rights. He also presents a detailed critical analysis of Habermas's key claims and arguments. Separate appendixes introduce and clarify such important concepts as causal, teleological, and narrative paradigms of explanation in action theory; contextualism versus rationalism in social scientific methods of interpretation; systems theory and functionalist explanation in social science; and decision and collective choice theory.

Book Granularity An Ontological Inquiry Into Justice and Holistic Education

Download or read book Granularity An Ontological Inquiry Into Justice and Holistic Education written by Şevket Benhür Oral and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-26 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an original exploration of philosophical questions pertaining to the ways we grasp the Absolute by bringing together the Buddhist notion of interpermeation of all phenomena into contemporary strains of thought in continental philosophy. This text introduces an ontological concept, granularity, deploying it to probe questions concerning the intersection of ontology, ethics, and education. A wide range of issues in metaphysics are covered—including being, nothingness, unity, plurality, truth, change, transformation, subjectivity, contradiction, coherence, potentiality—from the perspective of thinkers such as Hegel, Heidegger, Badiou, Meillassoux, Malabou, Žižek, and Harman. The text deploys granularity in arguing for an ethics of unconditional hospitality within education. This volume is intended for students and researchers working in the areas of philosophy of education, philosophy of religion, and continental philosophy.
