For the most part, the studies on connectives are based on referentialist descriptive frameworks, which are sustained more or less explicitly on what we have called the general problem of causality, the epistemological foundation of a scientific paradigm which has been used for centuries but which, in our opinion, is now outdated. In the first place, we have submitted this old paradigm to critical debate, showing the limits of its scientific validity. Next, we have placed ourselves in a non-referentialist linguistic framework, the Theory of Argumentation in the Language-System, developed by the French linguist Oswald Ducrot, in which we have formulated a new descriptive proposal for discourse connectives, taking into account both the argumentative configuration and the polyphonic configuration of each of the discourse dynamics generated around a given connective. We have described the argumentative configuration in terms of semantic blocks, and the polyphonic configuration in terms of discourse algorithms, original and innovative heuristic instruments with which we attempt to stimulate a new approach to language more in line with the general scientific approaches of the 21st century, and with the new scientific paradigm which is currently valid.

This interest has entailed a focus on the role of language and discourse in the processes in and through which subjects are constituted in discourse. However, questions of agency and how it relates to consciousness have received less attention. This book explores the ways in which agency and consciousness are created through transactions between self and other. The book argues that it is necessary to regard body-brain interactions in the context of the social and discursive practices which act upon human bodies. These issues of agency and individuation are explored in relation to infant semiosis, as well as in relation to children's symbolic play. Thibault looks at the importance of the self-referential moral conscience in relation to the interpersonal dimension of all acts of meaning-making. This conscience is also connected to the development of a self-referential viewpoint which the book argues is connected to the ecosocial semiotic systems of thinking about consciousness as a complex system operating on many different levels. The author discusses and evaluates the work of linguists, psychologists, biologists, semioticians, and sociologists such as Basil Bernstein, Mikhail Bakhtin, J. J. Gibson, M. A. K. Book excerpt: Discourses are dynamic things - new information gets communicated, affecting the state of the conversation and the states of minds of the conversational participants. This work explores the question of how much of these discourse dynamics should be accounted for by semantics and how much by pragmatics. There are some philosophers and linguists who claim that the dynamic nature of discourse is good reason for abandoning traditional truth-conditional semantics and adopting instead a notion of semantics that focuses on the level of discourse, treating the semantics of sentences as their contribution to the discourse as a whole, or as their potential effect on the conversational context (dynamic semantics). I argue that such a semantic explanation is the wrong sort of explanation; we can maintain a traditional, static semantics and explain changes to the context by appealing to pragmatics - broadly speaking, by appealing to the fact that conversations are rational, co-operative activities. In chapter 1, I examine some purported differences between dynamic and static semantics, arguing that the central difference between the two views is whether (at least some) changes to the conversational context are encoded in the semantics or explained by pragmatics. In chapters 2-4, I look at an extended case study of discourses containing indefinite descriptions and cross-sentential anaphora, such as: A woman walked in. She ordered lunch. The first sentence in this sort of discourse seems to introduce a new object under discussion that the pronoun in the second sentence picks up on. In chapter 2, I argue that there are good reasons to think a dynamic semantic account is not the right sort of approach, and that a pragmatic approach better explains the data. In chapter 3, I extend my pragmatic account to cases of embedded indefinites such as: A wolf might walk in, Mary doesn't own a car, and If a farmer owns a donkey, he beats it. In chapter 4, I argue against a rival approach that tries to explain the same phenomena by appealing to the referential intentions of speakers.

The common ground is the information that is presupposed by speakers and addressees, and a central concern of this book is with the notion of presupposition, and with the interaction of compositional structure with discourse dynamics in the explanation of presuppositional phenomena. Presupposed information includes background information both about the subject matter of a discourse and about the evolving discourse itself, and about the attitudes of the participants in the discourse, including who and where they are, and what they agree and disagree about. Stalnaker provides a way of representing self-locating information that helps to explain how it can be shared and communicated, and how it evolves over time. He discusses the semantic and pragmatics of conditionals and epistemic modals, and their role in representing agreement, disagreement, and the negotiation about how a context should evolve.
