Ideals of political transparency and communicative openness are identified as a basis for (disappointed) expectations of speech which trigger and determine metadiscourse about politicians’ silences. Finally, the book deals critically with the role of those who act as advocates of ‘the public’s’ demand to speak out.

The study used video and tape recordings, general observations, interview with both students and teachers and surveys in an attempt to capture the rich narrative of the silencing practices of the participants. The established research on silencing practices notes a historical bias of silencing practices negatively being applied to minorities and females. While this study did not capture such a phenomenon, data did show that those student participants who chose to speak out of turn and break the accepted shared classroom culture of normative discourse exhange experienced negative consequences, which included being silences by the teacher, but also included harassment from fellow students, lower grades, and more referrals to the office and detentions as a form of punishment. The social and political implications of such practices are potentially great, because the study demonstrated that once a dominant classroom culture is established, any voice that does not fit the established discourse practices of that class culture suffers negative consequences. As America redefines and evaluates issues of civil liberties and marginalized voices, the findings of this study emphasized the importance of valuing and nourishing dissenting voice in the classroom where many would argue a discourse and culture of sharing and mutual resepct belongs."--From the abstract.

Torres Gregory distinguishes between human, primordial, and primeval forms of silence, and the linguistic, pre-linguistic, and proto-linguistic levels at which silence can occur in relation to sonorous speech. While the book focuses on these inner conceptual dynamics, the author remains mindful of Heidegger’s ties to National Socialism and clarifies how his theoretical assumptions allow for oppressive silencing.
