Book excerpt: Over 250 Disco-era album covers-from sexy to silly, elegant to outrageous-that brings alive a time when fashion, politics, and sexuality all converged in harmony on the dance floor. Paging through To Disco, with Love is like catching Saturday Night Fever all over again. From Diana Ross and Donna Summer gazing fiercely from their chart topping albums to the Village People's trademark costumes and the Bee Gee's blinding white jumpsuits, To Disco celebrates the days when the dance floor ruled the world. Gathered together and presented chronologically, these striking covers tell the story of a moment in time when art and photography, music, and dance changed the world. We see a rapid evolution, from the early days when Disco's roots were firmly planted in Soul, Latin, and Jazz, all the way to the digital revolution of the 1980s. Like fleeting moments caught in the strobe, these covers vibrantly capture our takes on fashion and beauty, wealth and status, sex, race, and even God. As the hair gets bigger, bell bottoms wider, and platform shoes steeper, the vibrancy and energy of this moment in music history is brought back to vivid life. Accompanied by insightful, spirited descriptions that showcase the evolving trends in photography, illustration, and design, To Disco, with Love charts the history of the music and the industry during its groovy heyday.

Download or read book Disco Dance written by Lori Ortiz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the fascinating untold story behind what is collectively and disputably called "disco dancing," and the incredible effect that the phenomenon had on America—in New York City and beyond. Disco is a dance and musical style that still influences these art forms today. Many think that disco "died" completely after the 1970s drew to a close, but in actuality people continued dancing in the clubs after the very word "disco" became an anathema. Disco Dance explains why disco was more than just a dance form or a fad, describing many of the clubs—in New York City especially—where the disco subculture thrived. The author examines the origins of disco music, its evolution, and how young people adapted the dance styles of the day to the disco beat, charting how this dance of celebration and rebellion during troubling times became subject to ridicule by the end of the decade.

Book excerpt: Mid-town Buppies, big-time mobsters, fabulous dancing queens, and unscrupulous promoters all come together in After Dark, a first-hand account of the birth and growth of the disco movement in the 1970s. Disco music has earned an unflattering reputation for being garish and flashy; however, it was the voice of a generation that spoke using the power of dance to unite people. Now, for the first time you can hear the compelling, never-been-told story of the rise of the New York disco scene. In the late 1960s, a group of college students formed a social club called "The Best of Friends" (TBOF) and learned to monetize their love of dancing and music by building a multi-million-dollar network of discotheques. Their innovative DJing techniques transported dancers into a carefree state of euphoria that paved the way for "Saturday Night Fever," Studio 54, and the nationwide explosion of disco in the late '70s. TBOF discotheques attracted everyone from CEOs to mailroom clerks, from Rick James to Elizabeth Taylor, and from big-time mobsters to FBI agents. This unprecedented collection of humanity made it impossible to know what excitement would unfold each night. What the partners in TBOF did know is that After Dark, they had to be on their toes.

Book Global Dance Cultures in the 1970s and 1980s

Download or read book Global Dance Cultures in the 1970s and 1980s written by Flora Pitrolo and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2023-04-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores some of disco’s other lives which thrived between the 1970s and the 1980s, from oil-boom Nigeria to socialist Czechoslovakia, from post-colonial India to war-torn Lebanon. It charts the translation of disco as a cultural form into musical, geo-political, ideological and sociological landscapes that fall outside of its original conditions of production and reception, capturing the variety of scenes, contexts and reasons for which disco took on diverse dimensions in its global journey. With its deep repercussions in visual culture, gender politics, and successive forms of popular music, art, fashion and style, disco as a musical genre and dance culture is exemplary of how a subversive, marginal scene – that of queer and Black New York undergrounds in the early 1970s – turned into a mainstream cultural industry. As it exploded, atomised and travelled, disco served a number of different agendas; its aesthetic rootedness in ideas of pleasure, transgression and escapism and its formal malleability, constructed around a four-on-the-floor beat, allowed it to permeate a variety of local scenes for whom the meaning of disco shifted, sometimes in unexpected and radical ways.

As a highly sought-after consultant specializing in transforming dilapidated French country estates into boutique hotels, she relishes her freedom as a single, childfree woman. And her life is full, occupied as much by her impeccable historic renovations as by the aristocratic -- and often exhausting -- French families she works for. But after the heated divorce of her closest friend and cousin Stephanie Bryce, Lea finds herself taking Stephanie and her college-aged daughter to the Loire Valley in France for the summer. As they tag along for Lea’s latest work assignment, despite their best intentions, they threaten to complicate the tightrope act of launching the hotel on time. And when Lea unexpectedly falls for the much-younger son of her boss, she quickly learns the beauty and danger of losing control. As affairs bloom in the idyllic chateau, wars of inheritance play out between the family, and betrayals threaten even the most solid relationships. Lea realizes that it's not just a broken heart she's risking, but her entire, meticulously-constructed life blowing up in her face.
