Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amy Sinclair grew up in a small town nestled between the hills and the river. Being born in 1916, her life was much different from children today. Her first home had no electricity, no hot water, and no inside bathroom. How did children play in the early 1920s? What was school like? What kind of clothes did they wear? What was it like riding in some of the very first cars that were ever made? In this book, Amy will take you on a journey into the past. You may discover that even though it is almost a century later, some things never change. Amy Sinclair has dedicated her life to serving the Lord in many areas. She is a mother, grandmother, and retired occupational therapist. She has been active in church work since she was a child, serving as a Sunday School teacher, pianist, organist, and many other church ministries. Her interests are volunteering at a local hospital, gardening, genealogy, having time with her family, and reading. Just as she loved reading books as a child, she still reads a complete novel every day.

Download or read book The Grand Duke from Boys Ranch written by Bill Sarpalius and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a boy in Houston, Bill Sarpalius, his brothers, and their mother lived an itinerant life. Bill dug food out of trashcans, and he and his brothers moved from one school to the next. They squatted in a vacant home while their mother, affectionately called “Honey,” battled alcoholism and suicidal tendencies. In an act of desperation, she handed her three sons over to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch north of Amarillo. At the time, Bill was thirteen years old and could not read. Life at Boys Ranch had its own set of harrowing challenges, however. He found himself living in fear of some staff and older boys. He became involved in Future Farmers of America and discovered a talent for public speaking. When he graduated, he had a hundred dollars and no place to go. He worked hard, earned a scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and obtained a college degree. After a brief career as a teacher and in agribusiness, he won a seat in the Texas Senate. Driven by the memory of his suffering mother, he launched the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse in an effort to help people struggling with addiction. Sarpalius later served in the United States Congress. As a Lithuanian American, he took a special interest in that nation’s fight for independence from the Soviet Union. For his efforts, Sarpalius received the highest honor possible to a non-Lithuanian citizen and was named a “Grand Duke.” The Grand Duke from Boys Ranch is a unique political memoir—the story of a life full of unlikely paths that is at once heartbreaking and inspirational.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of the autobiographies composed by ten sisters. It is an inspirational story of a family with extraordinary parents who raised twenty-two children. After over a year of marriage, they became surrogate parents of seven children. They never complained, but did whatever it took to provide for the household. Ten daughters share unforgettable real life accounts of how the whole family handled calamity. Each unique story will share a different aspect of Gods faithfulness to His Word and to those who put their trust in Him. This book testifies that God will never leave us nor forsake us, and He is a present help in the time of trouble. It is a book to commemorate amazing parents who lived for a cause bigger than themselves and survived insurmountable challenges. Each chapter tells about a Mom who was audacious in facing oppositions because of her faith in an unfailing God. And above all, this book tells about a loving heavenly Father who is the foundation of the family; who spoke a Word over the lives of family members, and used earthly parents to train the children to carry out His plan. This story shows how God has been watching over His Word that was planted in the lives of individuals to perform it long after the parents are gone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hain't we got all the fools in town on our side? And ain't that a big enough majority in any town?" -- Mark Twain When Lucifer Dye is released from three months in a Hong Kong prison, debriefed, handed a false passport, a new wardrobe and a $20,000 check, his haughty control makes it clear that Dye's career with his country has been permanently terminated. But a good agent is always in demand, and just a few hours later Dye is being interviewed for a highly ingenious position. Victor Orcutt, although a not very good imitation of a British pre-war gent, has creative talents of his own. He has his sights a small southern city, with the ordinary run-of-the-mill corruption one would expect in such a place. The canny Orcott knows there's no profit in that. His creed is "To get better, it must be much worse." He and his two associates have looked up Dye's history, and he now offers the ex-spy a mission: for two and a half times the government's bounty, Dye is to thoroughly corrupt the town. And the sly Dye takes the offer.
