Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nelson Fausto The Greek myth of Prometheus with its picture of a vulture feasting on its chained victimhas traditionallyprovided a visualimageofliverregeneration. Itis apowerful and frightening representationbut ifone were to substitute the vulture by a surgeon and Prometheus by a patient laying on a properly prepared operating table, the outcomeoftheprocedurewould not differ significantlyfrom that describedbyGreek poets. Yet few of us who work in the field have stopped long enough to ask where this myth originated. Did the poet observe a case of liver regeneration in a human being? Was it brilliant intuition or perhaps, literally, just a 'gut feeling' of a poet looking for good rhymes that led to the prediction that livers grow when part of the tissueisremoved? Thisbookdoesnotattemptto solve these historical issues. Itdoes, instead, cover in detail some of the major modem themes of research on liver regen eration, injury and repair. As indicated in Dr. N. Bucher's chapter, the modem phase ofexperimental studies on liver regeneration started in 1931 with the publication by Higgins and Anderson of a method to perform a two-thirds resection of the liver of a rat. The technique described has 3 remarkable features: 1) it is highly reproducible, resulting in the removal of 68% of the liver, 2) it has minimal if any mortality, and 3) it consists only of blood vessel ligation and does not involve cutting through or wounding hepatic tissue.

Book Architettura e governo delle citt

Download or read book Architettura e governo delle citt written by Sara Protasoni and published by Compositori. This book was released on 1998 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue investigates the changing role of the public engineering offices in modern European cities. Today the design/construction/management of works that determine the morphology and appearance of towns is part of a complex process of production. Local government increasingly has the job of mere coordination of scattered technical functions, thus losing global control over the town's shape. At the end of the 19th century, large municipalities could promote and implement directly the transformation of entire areas of towns, modifying both structure and appearance. By presenting several case studies European cities and towns between 1918 and the reconstruction, this issue will focus on the changed and still changing role of public engineering offices in determining the morphology of towns and in governing and affecting their transformations.

Book Changing Industrial Relations Modernisation of Labour Law

Download or read book Changing Industrial Relations Modernisation of Labour Law written by Marco Biagi and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-three distinguished authorities in the field of labour and industrial relations law gather here to enhance and complement the work of the late Marco Biagi, a man who, at the time of his violent and untimely death, had shown himself to be the most insightful and committed international scholar in this complex and controversial and, as it proved, even dangerous field. The topics covered range over many of Professor Biagi's special interests, including the following: the formulation of a new basis for labour law that could resolve new issues; employee protection in corporate restructuring; the trend toward individual 'enterprise bargaining'; a new European employment policy and what it might entail; the growing phenomenon of 'flexibilisation'; the effects of an aging workforce; the crucial nexus of free trade, labour, and human rights; the promise of EU enlargement; and protection of part-time workers. There is a lot of insight, innovation, and just clear thinking in this wide-ranging and far-reaching book. It will be of exceptional value to scholars, lawyers, and others concerned with the extensive and unpredictable changes under way in today's world of work.

Book excerpt: " . . . a distinct, broad, but compelling framework for examining a variety of laws and social policies." —Legal Studies Forum " . . . a very rich volume that has something to offer to many different tastes . . . an excellent companion to the main textbook in a large undergraduate law-and-society course." —Contemporary Sociology No issue has captured the imagination of social scientists and legal scholars more consistently than the creation of laws. This book was released on 2019-09-09 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work contains the papers of the thirteenth Conference on “Antitrust between EU Law and national law”, held in Treviso on May 24 and 25, 2018 under the patronage of the European Lawyers Union – Union des Avocats Européens (UAE), the Associazione Italiana per la Tutela della Concorrenza - the Italian section of the Ligue Internationale du Droit de la Concurrence (LIDC)-, the Associazione Italiana Giuristi di Impresa (AIGI), the European Company Lawyers Association (ECLA), and the Associazione Antitrust Italiana (AAI). Some of the papers have been extensively reviewed and updated by the authors prior to publication. The contributions contained in this volume are the result of an in-depth analysis and study of the most salient issues arising from the application of antitrust rules, carried out by experienced and high-ranking professionals, in-house lawyers, academics and EU/national and international institutional representatives who attended the Conference. They deal with extremely topical issues, lying at the heart of current antitrust debate. Some of the most contemporary topics include those related to private antitrust enforcement after the implementation of Directive 2014/104/EU, and to the interplay between antitrust and intellectual property rights. Ample consideration is also given to recent developments in the field of new technologies and the related antitrust issues, as well as to the relations between consumer protection and antitrust.

Book When the Crisis Becomes an Opportunity

Download or read book When the Crisis Becomes an Opportunity written by Paola Paoloni and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-16 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume analyzes how the COVID-19 crisis could be transformed into opportunities for those organizations that correctly interpret the change, adapt their strategies accordingly, and increase their chances of success in a post-pandemic scenario. Through this lens, the female role and contribution to recovery are analyzed and discussed in the economic, financial and social context. Even if many aspects set the COVID-19 crisis apart from the latest global financial crises – such as the unusual shutdown of businesses in specific sectors, social distancing regulations, and general uncertainty sparked by the pandemic – the challenges facing all organizations in the current recovery phase can present an opportunity for extraordinary growth and development in Europe. The focus of the contributions gathered here is not on “counting” the damages and losses but rather on monitoring the recovery and on emerging instruments to support national and global economic recovery, while paying special attention to women’s role in it.
