Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tidal Observations in the Arctic Seas Dear sir: The records of the tidal observations made under the direction of Dr. Kane, in the second Grinnell Expedition to the Arctic Regions, were placed in my hands by his late lamented father, Judge Kane, in December, 1857. Dr. Kane had selected Assistant Charles A. Schott, of the U. S. Coast Survey, for the reduction of a considerable portion of the observations made on that expedi tion; and I, therefore, placed them in Mr. Schott's possession for reduction, and recommend his paper for publication in the Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge. It is proper to state that the computations were at the expense of the Smithsonian Institution. This is the sixth and last paper of the series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Investigation of Tides and Currents: A Review of the General Methods Adopted, in a New Field of Investigation, by the Tidal Survey of Canada Bench Marks have almost always been established both at the principal and secondary stations, even when tidal observations have only been continued for a few months. These are valuable at present for local reference, and will be more so in future, when they are con useted together by some general system of levels. The Bench Marks thus established along the St. Lawrence and throughout the Maritime Provinces, are described in a Paper communicated to the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers The extreme levels of high and low water in the various harbours are there given; as well as the tide levels at the head of the Bay of Fundy, which are valuable for the security of the extensive hay lands in that region, known as dyked marshes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tide Tables: For the Year 1905 Tide tables for the use of mariners have been published by the Coast and Geodetic Survey every year since 1853. For the first fourteen years these tables appeared as appendixes to the Annual Reports of the Superintendent of the Survey, and consisted of more or less elaborated means for enabling the mariner to make his own tide predictions as occasion arose. The first attempt by this Survey to give predicted tides was by the issue of two pamphlets entitled Tide Tables for the Atlantic Coast of the United States for the year and Tide Tables for the Pacific Coast of the United States for the year respectively. The former contained the predicted times and heights of the high waters only for each day of the year 1867 at 15 stations, together with tidal con stants and differences for 108 stations. The latter contained similar predictions for 4 stations, together with differences for 16 stations. This marked a distinct advance over the earlier tables which had been issued by this Survey. The following year it was found desirable to include the low waters in all the predictions for the Pacific Coast, but for only one station on the Atlantic Coast, and it was not until the year 1887 that the low waters were given for all the Atlantic Coast stations. Commencing with the year 1896 the tide tables were extended to include the whole maritime world, practically as in the present volume. The full predictions for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are given for the first time in this volume; and those for Portland Breakwater, England, are discontinued to avoid an increase in the size of the tables. In order to meet the demand for a cheap edition of the tide tables for the United States and adjacent waters, two reprints have been issued, one for the Atlantic Coast of the United States, including Canada and the West Indies, price 15 cents; and the other for the Pacific Coast of the United States, together with a number of foreign ports in the Pacific Ocean, price 10 cents. This Survey acknowledges its indebtedness to the following-named authorities for valuable tidal information used in the preparation of these tables, in addition to the large number of observations already in its possession.
