Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology: For Use in Connection With Practical Zoology Many of the animals that are important economically are very difficult to obtain, and directions for the study of these have, of course, been omitted. These animals should, however, be demonstrated to the students whenever possible. A list of species suitable for laboratory study may be compiled from the textbook, and specimens may be obtained from the dealers whose names appear in the appended list. Details such as topics for library study, questions for review, etc., have purposely been omitted from this laboratory manual in order that each teacher may have an opportunity to carry out his own ideas regarding these subjects. It has also been left for the teacher to decide which of the exercises should be shortened, or left out entirely, if the time necessary for studying them all is not available. The methods of teaching zoology and physiology are ably treated in Part II of Lloyd and Bigelow's book, "The Teaching of Biology in Secondary Schools," published by Longmans, 1904. Price $1.50. Discussions of courses in zoology will also be found in current numbers and back volumes of the magazine "School Science and Mathematics." Laboratory equipment and supplies may be obtained from the following dealers. Catalogues may be secured from them through a simple postal card request. Bausch & Lomb Optical Co., Rochester, N.Y. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology: For Use in Connection With a Text-Book in General Zoology Questions have been arranged both in the form of numbered and unnumbered paragraphs in order that teachers may com pare the two methods; for better comparison the directions for the study of the living locust and the living frog have been printed in both ways. It will be noticed that drawings are required of the pupil after he has studied the animal, and that emphasis is laid on drawings showing the parts in their proper relation in the animal body; in only a few cases, where certain organs cannot be clearly shown in the body, are they to be separated and made the subject of a distinct drawing. Book Laboratory Directions for an Elementary Course in General Zoology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Directions for an Elementary Course in General Zoology Classic Reprint written by Harley Jones Van Cleave and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions for an Elementary Course in General Zoology An attempt has been made to secure a fair distribution of emphasis through a number of the more important aspects of the subject. The directions are so organized that the field work and laboratory study based upon it may be used either at the open ing or toward the close of the course, depending upon the time of year when the course is started. More work is outlined than is usually covered in a half-year course, thus allowing some choice of materials on the part of the instructor. A number of the outlines are intentionally brief. These offer opportunity of directing the student in a comparative study of forms closely related to others which have been treated in greater detail. The writer is indebted to Professor S. H. Gage for the use of the figure of the compound microscope. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Laboratory Directions in Principles of Animal Biology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Directions in Principles of Animal Biology Classic Reprint written by A. Franklin Shull and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions in Principles of Animal Biology The course for which this book of laboratory directions was prepared is a recognition of the growth which the science of Zoology has made in the past several decades. No longer a purely morphological subject, zoology is not in the opinion of the authors properly treated in a purely morphological course. Good teachers have long recognized that dis section and classification alone would not make a zoologist, and have striven in lectures and recitations to provide the larger outlook which the science has come to possess. But this recognition seems hardly adequate. If in the lectures and recitations due attention is paid to the type dis sections in the laboratory, morphology can scarcely avoid receiving an emphasis it does not deserve. If to avoid this over-emphasis the recita tions and lectures are devoted exclusively to evolution, distribution, ecology, genetics, etc., the laboratory exercises and recitations must seem unrelated to one another. Recitations and laboratory work thus become two courses Which the student pursues simultaneously. The only solution has appeared to be to make the laboratory work itself bear on the large questions of biology. The laboratory work may thus have a balance of its own, it does not need to be averaged with the recitations. This book contains directions for first-hand exercises which we believe have the emphasis properly placed. Morphology still receives more attention than any other division of the subject, but it is nearly everywhere directed to some end Which is not merely structure. Book A Laboratory Manual for Elementary Zoology

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual for Elementary Zoology written by Libbie Henrietta Hyman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual for Elementary Zoology This laboratory manual was prepared for the class in elementary zoology in the University of Chicago, and has been used in this course for some time. In the three months' time allotted for the course, nearly all of the work given in sections I to XII, inclusive, is completed, with the exception of the muscular and skeletal systems of the frog. The remaining sections have been added for publication because they seem to the author to be essential for a complete course in general zoology. The directions have been written entirely from the material, although, of course, many textbooks have been consulted throughout. An attempt has been made, not merely to give explicit directions for the study of the material, but also to point out the relation of each section of the work to the general principles of biology and to make clear why each particular kind of material has been selected. The sections are given, naturally, in the order which the author thinks most logical, but they can be shifted at the will of the instructor. Our experience, extending over many years of trial of both methods, has shown that starting the course with the dissection of a complex animal is much more satisfactory than introducing the student at the start to the lower invertebrates, for the reason that the simplicity of the latter cannot be appreciated and understood except with reference to completely differentiated animals. Any vertebrate would serve the purpose, but the arthropods are in general unsuitable because they introduce the problem of heteronomous segmentation for which the beginner is not prepared. Many teachers will object that the instructions arc too detailed and that it is better pedagogy to compel the student to work out things by himself; but the large amount of ground which must be covered in a relatively short time and the impossibility of providing sufficient laboratory assistants for the large classes with which we have to deal necessitate detailed directions. The student pursuing the modern college curriculum simply docs not have time to carry out an original investigation on the anatomy of an animal; and unless he is provided with detailed directions, instructors and assistants are overburdened with the task of explaining to him what he is looking at, what to do next, etc. There is no reason why this extra work cannot be avoided by including these explanations in the manual. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... A LABORATORY GUIDE CHAPTERS I-IX. INSECTS Suggestions To Teachers The locust has been quite generally found a satisfactory form with which to begin the study of insects. Its structure is sufficiently generalized to make observation of the external structure easy, and the various species are widely distributed and usually abundant in the autumn at a time when many schools begin the study of zoology. For the living animal the local species may be used, and the work may be carried on in the field or in the laboratory. Specimens may be collected till quite late in the autumn, in grassy areas in the central and eastern United States, and they will live for some time if kept in a breeding-cage or other receptacle, with a piece of sod. For the external structure, either the Carolina locust (Dissoteira carolina), the American migratory locust (Acridium americanum), or the lubber locust (Eomalea microptera) may be used. These are all large species, which may be obtained, if not local to the region, from dealers in natural-history supplies. The authors do not require their pupils to dissect a locust. They have sometimes shown some of the systems of internal organs by dissecting specimens themselves before small groups of pupils, or they have used models or charts, supplemented by blackboard drawings. Very often pupils are found who are able to work out the gross anatomy, and their services may be enlisted for the benefit of other members of the class. The i development of the locust should be studied by means of specimens collected by the pupils or teacher, or obtained of dealers in natural-history supplies. Drawings to a convenient scale, made after the pupil has examined the organs, serve to fix their appearance in the mind. The pupil should...
