Book Direction Finding on Whistlers and Related VLF Signals

Download or read book Direction Finding on Whistlers and Related VLF Signals written by Michael Dennis Cousins and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The direction of arrival of whistlers and related VLF signals has been measured by a new technique. This technique consists of applying an already existing theory (the 'four-parameter method') to data collected by a novel measurement procedure. Measurements of signals induced in orthogonal loop antennas and a vertical monopole located at a single site provide the necessary data. The four-parameter theory relates the loop and vertical voltages, taking into account both amplitudes and phases so that polarization error may be eliminated. The technique can be shown equal or superior in accuracy to any other VLF direction-finding scheme in current use, such as the standard crossed-loops-and-goniometer technique. (Author).

Book Handbook of Atmospheric Electrodynamics 1995

Download or read book Handbook of Atmospheric Electrodynamics 1995 written by Hans Volland and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The participation of such diverse scientific and technical disciplines as meteorology, astronomy, atmospheric electricity, ionospheric and magnetospheric physics, electromagnetic wave propagation, and radio techniques in the research of atmospherics means that results are published in scientific papers widely spread throughout the literature. This Handbook collects the latest knowledge on atmospherics and presents it in two volumes. Each chapter is written by an expert in his or her field. Topics include the physics of thunderclouds, thunder, global atmospheric electric currents, biological aspects of sferics, and various space techniques for detecting lightning within our own atmosphere as well as in the atmospheres of other planets. Up-to-date applications and methodology are detailed. Volumes I and II offer a comprehensive discussion that together will serve as an important resource for practitioners, professionals, and students alike.

Book Dusty and Dirty Plasmas Noise and Chaos in Space and in the Laboratory

Download or read book Dusty and Dirty Plasmas Noise and Chaos in Space and in the Laboratory written by H. Kikuchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been asked by Professor Kikuchi to write a foreword for this interesting book on Dusty Plasmas and other electrical phenomena. This was a somewhat daunting task due to the wide range of topics covered. In what follows I have attempted to summarize most of these topics; for this purpose I have divided them into four groups, namely (a) Dusty Plasmas, (b) The Electrical Environment, (c) Lightning and (d) The Noise Environment. I hope that I have succeeded. in indicating that each section contains much that is of great interest. It is perhaps unnecessary for me to point out that the book contains subjects which are at an exciting and important stage in their development. (a) Dusty Plasmas The subject of dusty plasmas is one of great interest. Dust particles in interplanetary space, within comets, in inter-stellar space and at ever greater distances will in general be charged. The plasma environment will ensure this, bombarding electrons will charge up the particle until it assumes a "floating potential," although time variation can occur. Ultra violet radiation can cause photoemission and in certain cases field emission is a possibility. The motion of the particles will be determined by electric and magnetic fields together with gravity. If the density of charged grains becomes sufficiently high the grains will interact with each other and collective behaviour will ensue. This newly evolving subject entails the study of all kinds of plasma waves.

Book Environmental and Space Electromagnetics

Download or read book Environmental and Space Electromagnetics written by Hiroshi Kikuchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the updated versions of a lively mixture of tutorials, topical papers, and scientific and technological contributions collected from the International URSI Symposium on Environmental and Space Electromagnetics held in Tokyo on 4-6 September, 1989. It was sponsored by the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) as an activity of Commission E (Chairman: present editor) preceding the URSI General Assembly in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1990. The aim was an exchange of information and views to highlight the state of the art in radio science and interdisciplinary areas. Along this line, the editor has attempted to cover quite new, novel or unconventional subjects besides more traditional or conventional ones. Although a great many subjects have apparently been covered, this book has been edited so the reader can find some common concepts or views presented. On this basis, a group of many subjects can be treated in a unified fashion, and new ideas and views can be gained as a most valuable addition to current knowledge. This is one of the major features of this volume that cannot be found in any of the monographs or proceedings that cover a narrow range oflimited topics. Its broad scope does not stand for presentation in a superficial and shallow manner, but stands for a strong focus on the search for a common nature in basic concepts or views in apparently diverse subjects, and a focus on the advanced or innovatory nature of each contribution.

Book The Scientific Satellite Programme during the International Magnetospheric Study

Download or read book The Scientific Satellite Programme during the International Magnetospheric Study written by K. Knott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 10th ESLAB Symposium was held at Grossenzersdorf near Vienna on 10-13 June 1975 under the title 'The Scientific Satellite Programme During the Inter national Magnetospheric Study'. The Symposium was attended by an invited audience of 60 scientists from the ESA Member States, the United States, Japan, Canada and Austria. Following a report by the joint COSPAR-IUCSTP Special Working Group, the International Magnetospheric Study (lMS) is proposed as an international co operative enterprise of limited duration, having as its principal objective the achie vement of a comprehensive, quantitative understanding of the dynamical processes operating in the Earth's plasma and field environment. In order to accomplish this objective, it is thought to be necessary to carry out simultaneous measurements with nearly identical instrumentation at various points in space. These measurements will need to be made in combination with appropriate observations at or near the Earth's surface. Besides near-Earth observations by ground-based, rocket- and balloon-borne instrumentation, satellite investigations are expected to make an important contri bution to the IMS. A number of satellites assigned to magnetospheric research have recently been launched, or will be launched shortly, to be operational during the IMS. The European Space Agency has devoted two of its forthcoming scientific satellites - GEOS and ISEE-B - to magnetospheric and interplanetary research.
