Book Direct Generation of Acoustic Waves in Conducting Materials

Download or read book Direct Generation of Acoustic Waves in Conducting Materials written by Martin R. Gaerttner and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A method of generating (and detecting) ultrasound in metals through purely electromagnetic means is investigated in this thesis. Radio frequency pulse echo techniques used for studying this process, called direct generation (or detection), are described. Measurements of the coupling efficiency of direct generation in a number of metals are reported for both the local and non local limits of electrical conductivity. Accurate measurements of the temperature, frequency, and magnetic field dependence have been made using frequencies between 3 and 100MHz. A free electron theory which assumes specular scattering of electrons at the surface has been proposed by others. This theory is extended in this thesis and quantitative comparisons with experimental measurements are presented. It has been found that, in the local limit of conductivity, experiment and theory are in good agreement for both transverse and longitudinal waves. In the non local limit, only transverse wave direct generation was considered. Discrepancies between experiment and theory were observed for the non local case with a magnetic field parallel to the direction of acoustic propagation. It is postulated that effects of diffuse scattering of electrons at the surface are responsible for some discrepancies. An interesting oscillatory magnetic field dependence of direct generation is reported for magnetic fields oriented perpendicular to the direction of acoustic propagation. The effect is demonstrated to result from forces associated with Gantmakher splashes. Although the coupling efficiency of direct electromagnetic generation is weak, it is demonstrated that signals can be obtained that are useful for non destructive testing. There are indications that non local direct generation becomes very efficient at microwave frequencies. Direct generation has also been observed in liquid metals."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics: Principles and Methods, Volume X, is a five-chapter text that covers the principles and methods of generation of physical acoustics. The first chapter provides the essential results obtained concerning acoustic surface waves on curved surfaces and relates them to the corresponding plane surface waves. This chapter also presents a classification of surface and lateral waves on flat surfaces along with their properties. The second chapter describes a group of acoustic wave problems that are particularly suitable for study by means of Schlieren visualization. The third chapter deals with the production of ultrasonic waves by direct electromagnetic generation, while type II superconductors, which are useful for superconducting magnets with strong magnetic fields and with high current densities, are investigated in the fourth chapter. The fifth chapter discusses the principles of hologram and its application to very short length electromagnetic waves known as microwaves and to acoustic waves of various wavelengths.

Book Ultrasonics of High Tc and Other Unconventional Superconductors

Download or read book Ultrasonics of High Tc and Other Unconventional Superconductors written by Moises Levy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics, Volume XX: Ultrasonics of High-Tc and Other Unconventional Superconductors covers the many acoustic studies of the high-Tc superconductors. This book is composed of 10 chapters that include some unconventional superconducting systems, such as superfluid 3He, heavy Fermion superconductors, and magnetic re-entrant superconductors. The introductory chapter summarizes the results that have been observed in Bardeen, Cooper, and Schriefer superconductors as functions both of temperature and magnetic field. The subsequent chapters deal with the theoretical and experimental aspects of ultrasonic study of some unconventional superconductors. Considerable chapters are devoted to the measurements with sound waves on the sintered high-Tc superconducting systems. These chapters examine first the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the velocity and elastic constants in sintered high-Tc superconductors, as well as the sound absorption and dispersion measurements on single crystals of these superconductors. Discussions on the small-sample resonant ultrasound technique that uses thin piezoelectric films and the effect of oxygen on superconducting properties and the response of sound to these additions are also provided in these chapters. The concluding chapter presents a theoretical foundation for sound measurements in the superconducting state, emphasizing the effects of multigap structures and gas anisotropy on sound attenuation in the superconducting state of the cuprate superconductors. This volume will be of great benefit to researchers in the fields of electronics technology and in applied and engineering mechanics.

Book Applied Superconductivity

Download or read book Applied Superconductivity written by Vernon L. Newhouse and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Superconductivity, Volume II, is part of a two-volume series on applied superconductivity. The first volume dealt with electronic applications and radiation detection, and contains a chapter on liquid helium refrigeration. The present volume discusses magnets, electromechanical applications, accelerators, and microwave and rf devices. The book opens with a chapter on high-field superconducting magnets, covering applications and magnet design. Subsequent chapters discuss superconductive machinery such as superconductive bearings and motors; rf superconducting devices; and future prospects in applied superconductivity. Each chapter in the two volumes can be read independently, and most assume very little or no background in the physics of superconductivity. The topics treated do not require the use of advanced quantum mechanics; thus the books should be accessible to students or research workers in any branch of engineering or physics. They are intended to serve both as a source of reference material to existing techniques and as a guide to future research.
