This book was released on 2007 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents results of the search for B + → etaXK+ in which etaX → etapi+pi - or etaX → K0S K+pi-, and etaX is a potentially exotic state with a resonant mass within (1.2-1.8) GeV. We use the BABAR data of 382.9 million BB pairs and report the first observation of B+ → eta(1295) K+ and B+ → eta(1475)K+, and set upper limits for the modes listed below. We also consider an alternative signal model in the etaX → K0S K+/-pi∓ mode with an extra resonance, to better describe the meson mass spectrum. We provide the central values where possible. Hermitian conjugation is implied throughout the document unless stated otherwise. Book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements

Download or read book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements written by Markus Röhrken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book Observation of CP Violation in the B sup 0 Meson System

Download or read book Observation of CP Violation in the B sup 0 Meson System written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of[Upsilon](4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 million B[bar B] pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2[beta], is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2[beta]= 0.59[+-] 0.14 (stat)[+-] 0.05 (syst) establishes CP violation in the B[sup 0] meson system. We also determine[lambda]= 0.93[+-] 0.09 (stat)[+-] 0.03 (syst), consistent with no direct CP violation.

Book Direct CP Violation in Untagged B meson Decays

Download or read book Direct CP Violation in Untagged B meson Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct CP violation can exist in untagged, neutral B-meson decays to certain self-conjugate, hadronic final states. As a necessary condition, the resonances which appear therein must permit the identification of distinct, CP-conjugate states--in analogy to stereochemistry, we term such states ''CP-enantiomers.'' These states permit the construction of CP-even and CP-odd amplitude combinations and of observables sensitive to their interference, which are non-zero if direct CP violation is present. The decay B 2!??−?°, containing the distinct CP-conjugate states?+?− and?−?+, provides one such example of a CP-enantiomeric pair. We illustrate the possibilities in various multi-particle final states.

This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of 29.7 fb[sup -1] recorded at the[Upsilon](4S) resonance and 3.9 fb[sup -1] off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons, which are produced in pairs at the[Upsilon](4S), is fully reconstructed in the CP decay modes J/[psi] K[sub S][sup 0], [psi](2S) K[sub S][sup 0], [chi][sub c1] K[sub S][sup 0], J/[psi] K*[sup 0] (K*[sup 0][yields] K[sub S][sup 0][pi][sup 0]) and J/[psi] K[sub L][sup 0], or in flavor-eigenstate modes involving D(*)[pi]/[rho]/[sub 1] and J/[psi] K*[sup 0] (K*[sup 0][yields] K[sup+][pi][sup -]). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. A neural network tagging algorithm is used to recover events without a clear lepton or kaon tag. The proper time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between the decay vertices. Wrong-tag probabilities, the time-difference resolution function, and the B[sup 0]-[bar B][sup 0] oscillation frequency[Delta]m[sub d]are measured with a sample of about 6350 fully-reconstructed B[sup 0] decays in hadronic flavor-eigenstate modes. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample finds[Delta]m[sub d]= 0.516[+-] 0.016 (stat)[+-] 0.010 (syst) ps[sup -1]. The value of the asymmetry amplitude sin2[beta] is determined from a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged B[sup 0] decays in the CP-eigenstate modes. We find sin2[beta]= 0.59[+-] 0.14 (stat)[+-] 0.05 (syst), demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson system. We also determine the value of the CP violation parameter[lambda]= 0.93[+-] 0.09 (stat)[+-] 0.03 (syst), which is consistent with the expectation of[lambda]= 1 for no direct CP violation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of about 88 million [Upsilon](4S) 2!B{bar B} decays collected between 1999 and 2002. We study events in which one neutral B meson decay to the CP-eigenstates J/[psi] K{sub S}°, [psi](2S)K{sub S}°, [chi]{sub c1}K{sub S}°, and [eta]{sub c}K{sub S}°, or to flavor-eigenstates involving D{sup (*)}[pi]/[rho]/a1 and J/[psi]K*°(K*° 2!K [pi]−), is fully reconstructed. The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of its decay, mainly using the charge of identified leptons and kaons. The proper time elapsed between the meson decays is determined by measuring the distance between the decay vertices. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2[beta], is determined from a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of the flavor- and CP-eigenstate samples. We measure sin2[beta] = 0.755 ± 0.074 (stat) ± 0.030 (syst).

Book CP Violation From Quarks to Leptons

Download or read book CP Violation From Quarks to Leptons written by M. Giorgi and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006-07-25 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time after the discovery in 1964, by Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay, that the long-lived neutral kaon decays both into three and into two pions, which has since been taken as proof of CP violation, successive new and more precise experiments confirmed the original evidence and provided results compatible with a phenomenological description confining the CP violation to the mixing between neutral kaons and antikaons. However the Standard Model, with three generations of quarks, linking as it does CP violation to the presence of a single non trivial phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix, implies that if CP violation exists at all, then it is a general property of weak interactions, appearing in transitions were amplitudes involving all three quark families interfere with each other, producing effects with a magnitude related to that of the CKM coefficients. This fact has stimulated an impressive amount of theoretical work leading in many cases to precise predictions. This publication reviews the field, from both the theoretical and experimental point of view, while planning for the forthcoming experimentation at LHC and considering possible new facilities for kaon, B meson and neutrino physics. This book was released on 2012 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present improved measurements of CP-violation parameters in the decays B° →??−, B° → K+?−, and B° →?°?°, and of the branching fractions for B° →?°?° and B° → K°?°. The results are obtained with the full data set collected at the?(4S) resonance by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, corresponding to 467 ± 5 million B{bar B} pairs. We find the CP-violation parameter values and branching fractions S{sub?+?−} = -0.68 ± 0.10 ± 0.03, C{sub?+?−} = -0.25 ± 0.08 ± 0.02,?{sub K−?+} = -0.107 ± 0.016{sub -0.004}{sup +0.006}, C{sub?°?°} = -0.43 ± 0.26 ± 0.05,?(B° →?°?°) = (1.83 ± 0.21 ± 0.13) x 10−6,?(B° → K0?°) = (10.1 ± 0.6 ± 0.4) x 10−6, where in each case, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe CP violation with a significance of 6.7 standard deviations for B° →?+?− and 6.1 standard deviations for B° → K+{pi}{sup -}, including systematic uncertainties. Constraints on the Unitarity Triangle angle? are determined from the isospin relations among the B → {pi}{pi} rates and asymmetries. Considering only the solution preferred by the Standard Model, we find? to be in the range [71{sup o}, 109{sup o}] at the 68% confidence level.
