Book Diplomatic Investigations

Download or read book Diplomatic Investigations written by Herbert Butterfield and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diplomatic Investigations is a classic work in the field of International Relations. It is one of the few books in the field of International Relations (IR) that can be called iconic. Edited by Herbert Butterfield and Martin Wight, it brings together twelve papers delivered to early meetings of the British Committee on the Theory of International Politics, including several classic essays: Wight's 'Why is there no International Theory?' and 'Western Values in International Relations', Hedley Bull's 'Society and Anarchy in International Relations' and 'The Grotian Conception of International Society', and the two contributions made by Butterfield and by Wight on 'The Balance of Power'. Individually and collectively, these chapters have influenced not just the English school of international relations, but also a range of other approaches to the field of IR. After Diplomatic Investigations ceased to be available in print, it became a highly sought after book in the second-hand marketplace. This reissue, which includes a new introduction by Ian Hall and Tim Dunne, will ensure the book is available in the normal way, thereby enabling new generations of students and scholars to appreciate the work.

Book The Practice of Diplomacy

Download or read book The Practice of Diplomacy written by John Watson Foster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Diplomacy: As Illustrated in the Foreign Relations of the United States IT has not been the purpose to make this work a man ual of diplomatic procedure, that field being already occupied by European publications. It is rather designed as a companion volume and complement of A Century of American Diplomacy. As the latter sought to show the influence exerted by the United States in the fram ing and improvement of international law, the present work is intended, primarily, to set forth the part taken by American diplomatists in the elevation and purifica tion of diplomacy and, secondarily, to give in popular form, through such a narrative, the rules and procedure of diplomatic intercourse. While it is prepared for the general reader, numerous citations of authorities are given to enable the student to pursue his investigation. Book A Century of American Diplomacy

Download or read book A Century of American Diplomacy written by John W. Foster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of American Diplomacy: Being a Brief Review of the Foreign Relations of the United States 1776-1876 The present work is the outgrowth of a series of lectures delivered in the School of Diplomacy of the Columbian University. Two motives have influenced their publication. The first is the h0pe of the author that by a study of this review of the diplomatic con duct of our most distinguished statesmen, the young men of the country may have their patriotism quick ened, and be inspired with a new zeal to assist in maintaining the honorable position of our government in its foreign relations. Few may be able to enter the diplomatic service, but every citizen may exercise an influence in so shaping our foreign policy that the government shall continue to occupy a worthy position among the nations of the earth. The other motive is the belief that, in view of the recent enlarged political and commercial intercourse of the United States with other powers, a succinct history of the diplomatic affairs of the government from its foundation would be opportune, and that it might be useful in the solu tion of the questions of foreign policy now so urgently presented to the American people. Book American Diplomacy Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Diplomacy Classic Reprint written by Carl Russell Fish and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Diplomacy This book is intended as a comprehensive and balanced, though brief, review of the history of American diplomacy. It is hoped that it will prove useful both to the student in the classroom and to the general reader, and will help to diffuse a knowledge of our diplomacy at a time when it is becoming increasingly important that public opinion should be internationally minded. While it is for the most part based upon an independent study of the sources, it is not presented as a contribution to knowledge but rather as a condensation of ascertained conclusions. The footnotes, therefore, contain few specific references to support the text, but rather suggest to the reader material for further study; either the more important sources, which in the case of diplomatic history are exceptionally readable, or those accounts and monographs which are most useful. Book The Relations of the United States and Spain Diplomacy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Relations of the United States and Spain Diplomacy Classic Reprint written by French Ensor Chadwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of the United States and Spain Diplomacy This book is the outcome of a study of the causes of the war of 1898 between the United States and Spain. Beginning as a pre liminary chapter of the war, it was soon found that these causes were of such long growth and Of such intricate character that it was vain to hope to bring them into Short compass. The attempt at compression was abandoned and the book is thus an effort to bring before the reader the story of more than a hundred years of what has been really a racial strife; on the part of one race for actual domination over regions in which apparently it could not brook a division of rule; on the part of the other for the preserva tion of the status quo. The late war was thus but the culmination of difficulties which had their seed in the peace of 1763. They sprung into life twenty years later with the advent on the world's stage of the American Union; remained in full vigor for half a century thereafter with scarcely an interval of repose, and waxed and waned for seventy five years more, until finally war came in 1898 to remove the last cause Of friction. Few Of the 115 years from 1783 to 1898 were free from bitterness of feeling. The war was thus but a final episode in a century Of diplomatic ill-feeling, sometimes dormant but more Often dangerously acute. Book The Principles of American Diplomacy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of American Diplomacy Classic Reprint written by John Bassett Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of American Diplomacy The present work incorporates substantially the entire text, with few alterations or amendments, of the volume published by the author in 190 5 under the title American Diplomacy: Its Spirit and Achieve ments. The narrative in that volume, however, embraces few incidents that occurred later than 190 3. The years that have since elapsed have been marked by important events, some of which are destined to be highly influential in shaping the future course of the foreign policy of the United States. The present work brings the history of that policy down to date. The object of the author in the preparation Of the original work, as well as in its revision, has been to set forth and explain the fundamental principles by which the diplomacy of the United States has been governed. Domestic policy and foreign policy are seldom wholly diverse, and foreign policy is in the main profoundly influenced by local interests and ideals. Consequently, just as the internal develop ment of each nation presents some distinctive phase or phases, so we may expect its foreign policy to bear distinctive marks by which it can be identified. Book International Relations Classic Reprint

Download or read book International Relations Classic Reprint written by Stephen Haley Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Relations The relations of nations and Of people to each other are de termined by the sum total of human progress and of the ideals which lead men to happier lives and more useful activities. In the march of civilization law-makers of necessity follow rather than lead. The great inventions which arouse the imagination are the pioneers. The mariner's compass pointed the way over the unknown seas and gave assurance that whatever course was taken might be retraced. To it and the spirit of adventure it aroused the world owes the conversion of the ocean from an impassable barrier, separating the continents into different worlds, to a great universal thoroughfare connecting every port of every land with every other port. Following the dis covery of America and the settlement of Europeans along its coasts came colonial problems to the statesmen of Europe and the necessity of changing their theories of rulership by arbi trary force for a system affording the people of the colonies some measure of liberty in the regulation of their affairs. With no means of communication between the two continents but sailing vessels, there was such partial isolation as induced the growth of new customs, modes of life and ideas of social te lations. In time these became so distinct and firmly established that the colonists would not submit to the ill-advised measures of the governments of the parent countries. The result was political separation and the organization in the western hemi sphere oi republican governments now numbering twenty-one.
