Book Studying Singapore s Past

Download or read book Studying Singapore s Past written by Ping Tjin Thum and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C.M. (Mary) Turnbull's contributions to historical writing on Singapore extended from her 1962 thesis, published in 1972 as "The Straits Settlements, 1826-1867: Indian Presidency to Crown Colony", to her magisterial history of Singapore, first published in 1977 and re-issued in 2009 in an updated edition as A History of Singapore, 1819-2005. Her approach to history involved detailed work with documents and published materials, with a particular focus on political and economic history. One contributor to the present volume described the book as an "exercise in endowing a modern 'nation-state' with a coherent past that should explain the present." As styles in history evolved, younger scholars including some of her former students and colleagues began exploring new approaches to historical research that drew on non-English-language souce material and asked fresh questions of the sources. Mary enjoyed controversy and expected debate, and had a deep interest in these accounts, which were in many ways a natural progression from her own publications even when they raised questions about her interpretations and conclusions. Studying Singapore's Past had its origins in a conference organised to discuss her work. The volume includes ten contributions, some from long-established scholars of Singapore's history, others from a new generation of researchers. Their work offers an evaluation of established understandings of Singapore's history, and gives an indication of new directions that researchers are exploring. In publishing the book, the editor not only pays tribute to a distinguished historian but also seeks to make a contribution to the historiography of Singapore and to ongoing debates about Singapore's past.

Book Where is Art

  • Author : Simone Douglas
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2022-06-30
  • ISBN : 1000608085
  • Pages : 309 pages

Download or read book Where is Art written by Simone Douglas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring chapters by a diverse range of leading international artists and theorists, this book suggests that contemporary art is increasingly characterized by the problem of where and when it is situated. While much advanced artistic speculation of the twentieth-century was aligned with the question “what is art?,” a key question for many artists and thinkers in the twenty-first century has become “where is art?” Contributors explore the challenge of meaningfully identifying and evaluating works located across multiple versions and locations in space and time. In doing so, they also seek to find appropriate language and criteria for evaluating forms of art that often straddle other realms of knowledge and activity. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, contemporary art, art criticism, and philosophy of art.

Book The Rough Guide to Singapore

Download or read book The Rough Guide to Singapore written by Mark Lewis and published by Rough Guides. This book was released on 2003 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revered Apache spiritual and military leader and a recurring figure in pop culture lore, Geronimo was a key figure during the settlement of the American Southwest. He led one of the last major independent Indian uprisings and personified the struggle of Native Americans during westward expansion. Geronimo: A Biography explores the life of this legendary leader, a man who has become an icon of the courageous—and doomed—struggle of the Native Americans. This biography follows Geronimo's life from his traditional Apache upbringing to his final days as a celebrity prisoner of war. It discusses the historical and social forces at work during the period, including Native American traditions and lifeways. It also shows how Geronimo's surrender in 1886 marked the end of the traditional Native American way of life. No longer free to roam the lands of their forefathers, Indians faced a future of captivity and a struggle to maintain their identity and traditions.

Book Performing Objects

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fiona Kerlogue
  • Publisher : Horniman Museum Publications
  • Release : 2004

  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Performing Objects written by Fiona Kerlogue and published by Horniman Museum Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Africa is often neglected in surveys of African `art'. Masks and sculpted human figures, which are generally the main focus of interest for historians of African `art', are most notable for their relative rarity when compared with the rich accomplished traditions of the Zaire basin and West Africa. Therefore the question most often posed by sceptics is: `Is there `art' in East Africa?' Although various theories have been put forward as to why, for instance, East African sculptural traditions are apparently `inferior' to those of West and Central Africa there is no evidence, in the end, to suggest that East African peoples are significantly less concerned than other African people with `beauty' (however it is defined) and with appreciation of apt or meaningful form and with creative expression. The real challenge is not to explain why one culture produces more or less in the way of material objects than another, but to establish how particular expressions or forms of creativity relate to their makers' and users' intentions and how they function and are given meaning in particular social contexts.
