Book excerpt: This seminal volume on the indigenous African Dinka group is a landmark documentation of a vanishing people in war-torn Sudan. World-renowned photographers Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith have devoted their lives to documenting the rapidly disappearing ceremonies and cultures of the indigenous people of Africa. In breathtakingly poignant images, they present a story that started with their first visit to the Dinka thirty years ago. Living in harmony with their cattle, the Dinka have survived years of war only to find their culture on the brink of vanishing forever. Where the White Nile River reaches Dinka country, it spills over 11,000 square miles of flood plain to form the Sudd, the largest swamp in the world. In the dry season, it provides abundant pasture for cattle, and this is where the Dinka set up their camps. The men dust their bodies and faces with gray ash--protection against flies and lethal malarial mosquitoes, but also considered a mark of beauty. Covered with this ash and up to 7' 6- tall, the Dinka were referred to as -gentle- or -ghostly- giants by the early explorers. The Dinka call themselves -jieng- and -mony-jang, - which means -men of men.-

The country has a population of about 11 million people, with over 60 tribes, the largest of which are the Dinka, Nuer, and Shilluk. The official languages are English and Arabic, but there are over 60 indigenous languages spoken throughout the country. South Sudan faces significant challenges, including civil war, poverty, and underdevelopment. The country has experienced conflict and instability since gaining independence, with ongoing ethnic tensions and disputes over resources. The majority of the population lives in poverty, with limited access to basic services such as healthcare and education. Despite these challenges, South Sudan has a rich cultural heritage and is home to diverse ethnic groups, languages, and traditional customs. Efforts are being made to develop the country's infrastructure and economy, but progress has been slow due to ongoing conflict and political instability.

Book Handbook of Home Language Maintenance and Development

Download or read book Handbook of Home Language Maintenance and Development written by Andrea C. Schalley and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even a cursory look at conference programs and proceedings reveals a burgeoning interest in the field of social and affective factors in home language maintenance and development. To date, however, research on this topic has been published in piecemeal fashion, subsumed under the more general umbrella of ‘bilingualism’. Within bilingualism research, there has been an extensive exploration of linguistic and psycholinguistic perspectives on the one hand, and educational practices and outcomes on the other. In comparison, social and affective factors – which lead people to either maintain or shift the language – have been under-researched. This is the first volume that brings together the different strands in research on social and affective factors in home language maintenance and development, ranging from the micro-level (family language policies and practices), to the meso-level (community initiatives) and the macro-level (mainstream educational policies and their implementation). The volume showcases a wide distribution across contexts and populations explored. Contributors from around the world represent different research paradigms and perspectives, providing a rounded overview of the state-of-the-art in this flourishing field.

Download or read book Dinka Chronicles written by Awak Malith and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dinka language is an old language. Its occurrence go as far back as the beginning of the recorded history. However, it was used largely orally. Fortunately, committing it to writing has began though this uncoordinated effort goes back to only the last fifty years or so. Although it is a language rich in figures of speech, carrying tremendous wisdom and culture, its rich traditions remain largely unrecorded and are, unfortunately, currently fast fading away. However, with the need to train the young, including my own, as has been the practice, I took pen to paper and started collecting and compiling its proverbs from all its sections. Most importantly, these proverbs have largely been written and translated from the point of view of the Twic Dinka language since that is the part of the Dinka Language which I understand better. Furthermore, this booklet is the accompanying English translation of the Keng e Monyjang Ci Maat Ic containing the 218 proverbs in Dinka Language as they are spoken. The collected and translated Dinka Proverbs in this small book will present to you unparalleled wisdom uniquely from the Dinka world. Learn them to guide your young. I hope I did not miss some parcels of this wisdom in translation.
