Book excerpt: In a small town in country Australia, railway man George Bingham toils away, dreaming of adventure in far-off lands. When the call for Great War volunteers comes, he leaves behind his worn mattock and his first love, jumping the first ship to set sail for a stricken Europe. As the war moves from Gallipoli to the Somme, George becomes 'Sunflower', enduring squalid trenches and immeasurable heartbreak, a prophecy foretold by a beautiful Bedouin in the backstreets of a Cairo marketplace. As George struggles to reclaim his humanity amid the tragedy, he meets a French nurse who heals his wounds and teaches him to dream again. A novel of war, survival and love, Sunflower proves the redemptive power of hope in the hideousness of battle.

Download or read book Trollope and Women written by Margaret Markwick and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trollope is usually seen as a faithful mirror of Victorian England, both in providing intimate details of contemporary life and in endorsing the moral attitudes and certainties of the period. His powers of empathy make his characters convincing and knowable in an astonishing way. Yet the Victorians restricted women to the house and severely limited their rights and opportunities. Trollope and Women examens the conundrum of how a great novelist could both accept the conventional values of the time and yet be able to see and sympathise with the impossible situations in which Victorian women often found themselves. Margaret Markwick shows the individuality of Trollope's women: even conventional Angel in the House heroines, like Mary Lowther in The Vicar of Bullhampton, can surprise us at times. More tellingly, he cannot help giving some of his less angelic characters, such as the vivacious Lizzie Eustace in the Eustace Diamonds, his unwilling admiration. His range extends beyond simple romance to the realistic handling of marriages, both happy and unhappy, and to the treatment of bigamy and scandal. He shows men and women getting on together as well as fighting bitterly. Nor are Trollope's novels as devoid of sex as has often been thought.

Download or read book Gold Digger written by Constance Rosenblum and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sparkling biography of the original blonde whom gentlemen preferred, a woman who made a career of marrying millionaires and became the first tabloid celebrity. One of America's most talked about personalities during the Jazz Age, Peggy Hopkins Joyce was the quintessential gold digger, the real-life Lorelei Lee. Married six times, to several millionaires and even a count, Joyce had no discernible talent except self-promotion. A barber's daughter from Norfolk, Virginia, who rose to become a Ziegfeld Girl and, briefly, a movie star, Joyce was the precursor of the modern celebrity-a person famous for being famous. Her scandalous exploits-spending a million dollars in a week, conducting torrid love affairs with the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Walter Chrysler-were irresistible to the new breed of tabloid journalists in search of sensation and to audiences hungry for the possibilities her life seemed to promise. Joyce's march across Broadway, Hollywood, and the nation's front pages was only slowed by the true nemesis of the glamour girl: old age. She died in 1957, alone and forgotten-until now. In prose as vibrant as its subject, Constance Rosenblum's Gold Digger brings to life the woman who singularly epitomized this confident and hedonistic era.
