Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is one of a series of major publications marking the culmination of the officer prediction research program and the impact of the findings on BESRL's ongoing and newly formulated programs on officer evaluation and the career development. It presents the important dimensions of officer leadership behavior derived from analyses of more than 2000 single observations and judgments by trained military staff on each officer participant during a three-day OEC simulation. Over 300 scales and evaluations were assembled from analysis of the evaluations recorded on 900 officers performing 15 tasks during a three-day OEC exercise. The series of factor analyses by which the dimensions of leadership performance were obtained from these data are given in detail in a technical supplement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the research was to develop measures predictive of officer performance in combat and technical/administrative duties for use in early career management decisions and early career counseling and personal career choices. Two major dimensions of leadership--combat and technical/managerial--were clearly differentiated in the range of functional tasks constituting the simulated combat exercise. Officer characteristics as measured by the Differential Officer Battery were found to be differentially predictive of officer behavior in situations representative of the two major leadership dimensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A design for a large-scale research program on improving Navy team effectiveness. The report assesses the most critical Navy teams, identifies deficiencies in the performance of these teams, and recommends new research that could lead to significant improvements in team performance. The major conclusions are (1) teams performing time-stressed decisionmaking using symbolic information are most critical to mission effectiveness and ship survivability; (2) several currently available instructional methods could immediately improve training; (3) new interdisciplinary research should study simulated teams in laboratory task environments that provide computer-controlled task scenarios, realistic environmental and enemy models, and intra-team communications networks; and (4) promising approaches to improving teams include improving performance models of team tasks, improving the tools and methods of training, compensating for disruptive effects of turnover in team personnel, improving team organization, and improving human-machine systems to aid task performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As part of a leadership research program at the U.S. Military Academy involving cadets in the Class of 1998, this report examined the viability of using archival data on prior cadets to estimate a variety of personality constructs among current cadets. Two sets of archival personality data on prior cadet classes were obtained. The first involved a short form administration of the ABLE inventory to cadets in the Class of 1994. The second involved the administration of the NEO Personality Inventory to the Class of 1996. Scores on the 12 scales contained in these inventories were used as archival criteria. Archival predictors were then sought from other and questionnaire items administered to cadets at the same point in time as the original inventories. For each scale, a different 20-item pool of predictors was developed from the archival items having the strongest zero order correlations with that scale. A series of multiple regression analyses was then used to predict scores on each scale. An average R2 of .39 per scale was obtained after cross validation. Both the original scales and their analogs tended to manifest similar relationships with two external criteria examined, leadership performance and attrition.--DTIC.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To improve both the combat readiness of Army units and the psychological rewards derived from training, the Army Research Institute has developed a group of techniques for simulating battlefield conditions. These techniques are known collectively as Engagement Simulation (ES). The squad and platoon level application of ES is referred to a REALTRAIN. REALTRAIN can be distinguished from more conventional training along a number of dimensions, including the degree of operating constraints in the exercises, type of casualty assessment, nature of evaluative feedback, and sequence of training procedures. A paper-and-pencil instrument was constructed that measured six different dimensions of job-related motivation and satisfaction. Results indicated that along four of the motivation/satisfaction dimensions (Attitude Toward the Exercises, Military Work Role, Unit Cohesiveness, and Leader Improvement), responses were more positive following participation in REALTRAIN than before participation. In the remaining two dimensions, there was no change in the "before" and "after" measures of motivation/satisfaction. However, for the conventional exercises, there was no change in the before and after responses of participants along five of the dimensions. Along the remaining one, there was a decline in the satisfaction level in the conventional training."--Abstract.
