Download or read book The Amme Talks written by Ulf Stolterfoht and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Amme Talks is a conversation between poet and machine. In 2003, poet Ulf Stolterfoht and a chatbot named Amme (which means "wet nurse" in German) met in Berlin. For one week, Stolterfoht interrogated Amme: not just a chatbot, actually, but a steel-and-glass construction with a computer interface, which is connected to a glass of milk, a robotic arm that tips over the glass, and a tube that releases water, as if urinating. Stolterfoht asked Amme--the creation of artist Peter Dittmer--about the nature of authorship and the agency of language; he intended to turn the answers into an essay on poetics. While Amme replied to every question, Stolterfoht observed that the output was "highly self-reflexive, if not entirely self-referential," and impossible for him to assimilate into his writing. He'd hoped to glean something from Amme's performance of an idiosyncratic and mechanical form of human speech. Instead, he stumbled on a remarkable "second-order realism" in which words refer not to things but to themselves. In the dialogue presented in this book, Stolterfoht glimpses something other than what we understand as poetry, something apart from "solipsistic exercises" with language, something like "endlessly liberated speech"--A potential revolution in poetry mounted by a milk-spilling chatbot.

Book A Dignified Life

Download or read book A Dignified Life written by Virginia Bell and published by Health Communications, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease or a related form of dementia. By the year 2030, experts estimate that as many as 66 million people around the world will be faced with this life-altering disease. Unfortunately, these staggering statistics impact millions of caregivers, too. Compared with all types of caregivers, those who assist someone with dementia experience the highest levels of burnout, depression, poor health, and premature death. A Dignified Life, Revised and Expanded offers hope and help with a proven approach. Ten years ago, the first edition of A Dignified Life changed the way the caregiving community approached Alzheimer's disease by showing caregivers how to act as a Best Friend to the person, finding positive ways to interact even as mental abilities declined. Firmly grounded in the latest knowledge about the progression and treatment of dementia, this expanded edition offers a wealth of immediately usable tips and new problem-solving advice. It incorporates practical ideas for therapeutic activities—including the latest brain-fitness exercises—stimulate the brain while adding structure, meaning, and context to daily routines. With new stories and examples as well as an updated resources section, A Dignified Life, Revised and Expanded gives caregivers the support and advice they need to be successful and inspired in their demanding roles. While medical treatment of the disease hasn't changed in the past ten years, our understanding and awareness of treating people in a more caring way has changed substantially. With no cure on the immediate horizon, respectful care by effective and compassionate care partners is the only real "treatment" available to people with dementia. The Best FriendsTM Approach is successful because it sustains people's connection to their world, their loved ones, and themselves. It's a universal program which has been embraced by professional and family caregivers throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and South America. In its revised form, A Dignified Life offers caregivers an antidote to the burnout and frustration that often accompanies the role of caring for a person with Alzheimer's and dementia. Rather than struggling through a series of frustrations and failures, A Dignified Life shows the new generation care partners how to bring dignity, meaning, and peace of mind to the lives of both those who have Alzheimer's and dementia and those who care for them.

She comes from a long line of midwives. This lineage is not known for midwifery during birth, however. It is known for midwifery in death. Vivien Feryn has no way of knowing that her career in social work will lead her to the door of an eccentric herbalist. Actually, it is probably a good thing, as she needs some healing herself. She can't quite handle the "social" aspect of her work or private life for that matter. A childhood trauma haunts her. Her emotional distance from the world will be short lived though, as Fringe needs to find a replacement fast, and she decides on Vivien. Can the unsuspecting Vivien handle endings as well as Fringe, or will there be a midwife crisis in the community?

Book Miss Manners Guide to a Surprisingly Dignified Wedding

Download or read book Miss Manners Guide to a Surprisingly Dignified Wedding written by Jacobina Martin and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010-01-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bride and mother-of-the-bride rebel against today’s monster weddings and explain how weddings can be charming, affordable—and excruciatingly correct. Today’s brides are bombarded with wedding advice that promises perfection but urges achieving it through selfishness (“It’s your wedding, and you can do whatever you like”), greed (choosing the presents that guests are directed to buy), and showing off (“This is your chance to show everyone what you’re about”). Couples wishing to resist such pressure see elopement or a slapdash wedding as the only alternatives to a gaudy blowout. But none of these choices appealed to a bride who happened to have been brought up by Miss Manners. Judith Martin and her newlywed daughter, Jacobina, explain how to have a dignified ceremony and delightful celebration without succumbing to the now-prevalent pattern of the vulgar, money-draining wedding that exhausts families and exploits friends.

Book A Good and Dignified Life

Download or read book A Good and Dignified Life written by Joke Johannetta Hermsen and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely and provocative essay about the parallel lives of Rosa Luxemburg and Hannah Arendt and their mission for a more humane society "[A] short but moving book . . . Even better, the volume's advice is not only pragmatically political--necessary during a time of threats to democracy and mounting failures to deal with the climate crisis--but modestly uplifting."--Bill Marx, Arts Fuse "An intimate and timely meditation on dark times, Hermsen's illuminating essay offers readers a way to think with Hannah Arendt and Rosa Luxemburg about how to build a more humane world in common."--Samantha Rose Hill, author of Hannah Arendt Rosa Luxemburg (1871-1919) and Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) were critical Jewish mavericks who both suffered under violent political regimes and sought to reform systems of power. Although temporally separated by the Second World War and the rise of totalitarianism, they held in common strikingly similar convictions about freedom, human dignity, capitalism, democracy, and political commitment. In this powerful book, Joke J. Hermsen explores the lives and works of these two remarkable thinkers and the essential hope that emboldened them in the political struggle. Luxemburg and Arendt were spurred on by a restless love for the world and an unwavering belief in the possibility of new beginnings; for them, hope was an absolute prerequisite of resistance and a counterpoint to melancholy--a defense against despair that kept them attuned to what could be. Exploring the intertwined nature of philosophy and the active pursuit of justice, this is an urgent, courageous reminder to remain alert to the glimmers of hope in dark times.

Book Informal Labor Formal Politics and Dignified Discontent in India

Download or read book Informal Labor Formal Politics and Dignified Discontent in India written by Rina Agarwala and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, the world's governments have decreased state welfare and thus increased the number of unprotected 'informal' or 'precarious' workers. As a result, more and more workers do not receive secure wages or benefits from either employers or the state. This book offers a fresh and provocative look into the alternative social movements informal workers in India are launching. It also offers a unique analysis of the conditions under which these movements succeed or fail. Drawing from 300 interviews with informal workers, government officials and union leaders, Rina Agarwala argues that Indian informal workers are using their power as voters to demand welfare benefits from the state, rather than demanding traditional work benefits from employers. In addition, they are organizing at the neighborhood level, rather than the shop floor, and appealing to 'citizenship', rather than labor rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dignified Retreat is a panoramic study of the vibrant literary and intellectual culture that emerged in early seventeenth-century France following the devastating Wars of Religion. This was a period that not only witnessed the recovery of the country following these wars, and the emergence of a strong, 'absolutist' monarchy under the Bourbons, but also the rise and refinement of the French language and the development of a literary culture that would soon be known as French classicism. Casting his net over a wide range of writers and intellectuals, Robert A. Schneider has assembled a roster of more than 100 men and women of letters, those constituting what he calls the 'generation of 1630'. While diverse, and indeed divided between those who hewed to traditional humanism and others more attuned to 'modern' linguistic and literary developments, this cohort largely shared a commitment to a cultural renewal of France, its rise to prominence in the geopolitical arena of Europe, and the emergence of a strong centralized monarchy. They depended on both the traditional aristocracy and the king's powerful minister, Cardinal Richelieu. But despite this dependency, these writers and intellectuals maintained a degree of independence and, more significantly, were the prime movers in crucial cultural developments that are too often identified with royal initiatives. For example, the author demonstrates that the Académie française, founded in 1635 by Richelieu, often considered formative in French cultural history, was actually more the result of the creative initiatives of these men of letters, which the savvy Cardinal only managed to co-opt and turn to the purposes of the crown.
