Book Digitize Selected Granular Resources Information Pertinent to MGP

Download or read book Digitize Selected Granular Resources Information Pertinent to MGP written by Stephen H. Boles and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Geosolutions, Inc. of Exeter (Ontario) was contracted by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (Contract #A7133-06-0015) to summarize, digitize and update selected, currently available granular resource information in the vicinity of the Mackenzie Gas Project within the Northwest Territories. Output from this project will be used to enhance the utility of the existing Mackenzie Valley and ISR on-line mapping tools. The Departmental Representative responsible for this contract is Robert J. Gowan. This report describes the tasks performed to execute the contract, the resultant GIS and image files, and recommendation for the future. Much work has already been done to develop products to distribute information on granular resources in Canada's north. The Northern Granular Resources Bibliographic Database (http://www.aina.ucalgary.ca/ngr/) contains citations and abstracts to over 1600 reports on granular resources in Canada's three northern territories and adjacent waters. This database has helped to provide a central point to search for granular information and provides many documents in downloadable formats. In addition to the database, two on-line mapping tools have been developed for the Mackenzie Valley (MV) and Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR; URLs withheld at request of INAC). These mapping products are the next logical step towards providing a usable and applied tool for stakeholders to obtain information about the granular resource information that exists for a certain area. There is already a significant amount of information, in digital form, on the known granular deposits in certain portions of the region, yet much of this was compiled from sources of uncertain accuracy. More recent access to detailed imagery and more accurate GPS now permits better representation of existing resources. There is a large amount of interest, as was made evident at a recent workshop in Yellowknife, in providing even more detailed granular resource information to stakeholders through the on-line mapping tools. These tools can be an important component of the decision-making that deals with proposed and alternative locations of MGP facilities, and provide the spatial framework to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of the granular requirements of the MGP. The various groups involved with and affected by granular management planning are widely dispersed, resulting in travel and meetings that are expensive and difficult to arrange. Online tools provide an environment for data dissemination and dispersal and will be a critical component in the development of granular resource allocation plans which must involve an iterative process of recommendation and response. ... The contract document outlines the scope of work for this project as follows: 1. Identify and obtain, through the Departmental Representative and consultants designated by the Departmental Representative, library and Internet searches, pertinent reports and other background information on the MGP, and the location, extent and type of granular resources in the vicinity of the MGP. 2. Review existing digital information and systems pertinent to evaluation of the granular requirements of the MGP and other existing resources, identify key areas where information and/or resources are particularly abundant or deficient, and make recommendations to the Departmental Representative on the use, expansion or modification of these systems and information to evaluate the impact of the MGP on granular resources in the study area. 3. Compile, process and summarize selected additional granular resource information, based on quality of existing information and priority of importance to this study, as determined in consultation with the Departmental Representative. 4. Prepare, update and modify information on the location, extent and type of granular resources in the vicinity of the MGP, including georeferencing of existing airphoto and map-based site plans, digitizin g deposit boundaries, subsurface investigations (boreholes, test pits), test samples, etc. 5. Document source, compilation methods, etc. for all above data using metadata consistent with current industry standards. 6. Prepare digital archives including spatial information, descriptive attributes and scanned images for granular resources sites processed as part of this study. 7. Document, in tables, maps and a report, the work undertaken and results obtained through this project -- ASTIS (online) database.

Book Digital Capture and Processing of Granular Resources Information Pertinent to the Mackenzie Valley Project

Download or read book Digital Capture and Processing of Granular Resources Information Pertinent to the Mackenzie Valley Project written by T. A. M. Zimmer and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The availability of granular resources for industrial, commercial and public infrastructure use is an on-going concern in the Northwest Territories (NWT). Sizeable deposits of granular material suitable for construction use may be scarce in many parts of the NWT. Those deposits that do exist need to be identified and properly managed to ensure the needs of future developments can be met. This is especially true for areas in which large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Mackenzie Gas Project (MGP) are proposed. It is important that those assessing applications for the MGP have ready access to all available information about the granular resources in the vicinity of the MGP throughout the NWT. One such source of information is the Northern Granular Resources Bibliographic Database (http://www.aina.ucalgarv.ca/ngr/), which contains over 1,600 reports on granular resources in the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, and Nunavut. Among these many reports are several granular resource studies carried out by J.D. Mollard and Associates Limited (JDMA) over a span of nearly 40 years. ... JDMA recommended that INAC consider the option of capturing the granular deposit information contained in the PDF reports as geospatial objects in a geographic information system (GIS). In this way, the deposit information from multiple reports could be compiled into a single granular resources data repository that could be accessed and updated online as needed by INAC personnel. As it turned out, INAC had already considered just such an option and had carried out preliminary work establishing both standards for capture of such digital data and integration of digital granular information into a web-based map server for use by INAC personnel. In January 2008 INAC contracted JDMA to capture and deliver granular prospect information from five (5) of the JDMA studies previously delivered to INAC in PDF format as part of the October 2007 report. This report details the results of this datacapture and delivery, carried out in 2008" -- ASTIS [online] database.

Download or read book Granular Computing written by Andrzej Bargiela and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Granular Computing (GC) - an emerging conceptual and of information processing. As the name suggests, GC concerns computing paradigm processing of complex information entities - information granules. In essence, information granules arise in the process of abstraction of data and derivation of knowledge from information. Information granules are everywhere. We commonly use granules of time (seconds, months, years). We granulate images; millions of pixels manipulated individually by computers appear to us as granules representing physical objects. In natural language, we operate on the basis of word-granules that become crucial entities used to realize interaction and communication between humans. Intuitively, we sense that information granules are at the heart of all our perceptual activities. In the past, several formal frameworks and tools, geared for processing specific information granules, have been proposed. Interval analysis, rough sets, fuzzy sets have all played important role in knowledge representation and processing. Subsequently, information granulation and information granules arose in numerous application domains. Well-known ideas of rule-based systems dwell inherently on information granules. Qualitative modeling, being one of the leading threads of AI, operates on a level of information granules. Multi-tier architectures and hierarchical systems (such as those encountered in control engineering), planning and scheduling systems all exploit information granularity. We also utilize information granules when it comes to functionality granulation, reusability of information and efficient ways of developing underlying information infrastructures.
