Book Digital Filters for Earthquake Site Studies

Download or read book Digital Filters for Earthquake Site Studies written by Hendrik D. Carleton and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to develop a computerized technique for processing strong-motion accelerograms from earthquakes in order that earthquake vulnerability for existing structures can be more fully investigated through the use of simplified base excitations. Through filter theory, the Wiener normal equations were used to reduce accelerogram pairs to basic time histories called operators. This approach isolates the differences contained within accelerogram pairs from project sites at which the data were obtained. The operators are used with mathematical shocks (such as half-sine pulses) as inputs to produce simplified responses. Variations in the simplified responses are obtained by changing the durations of the half-sine or other hypothetical wave form inputs and using the same operator for each variation. Each family of responses is then studied to determine its sensitivity to these changes. As an example of this theory, data from an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 + or - were used to construct operators that related free-field motions to those on the main and auxiliary dams at the Isabella Reservoir near Bakersfield, California. Based on the results of this study, it is concluded that use of this technique should enable structural engineers to assess earthquake vulnerability for existing structures more fully, and that this in turn could lead to improvements in future designs.

Book Tsunami Data Assimilation for Early Warning

Download or read book Tsunami Data Assimilation for Early Warning written by Yuchen Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on proposing a tsunami early warning system using data assimilation of offshore data. First, Green’s Function-based Tsunami Data Assimilation (GFTDA) is proposed to reduce the computation time for assimilation. It can forecast the waveform at Points of Interest (PoIs) by superposing Green’s functions between observational stations and PoIs. GFTDA achieves an equivalently high accuracy of tsunami forecasting to the previous approaches, while saving sufficient time to achieve an early warning. Second, a modified tsunami data assimilation method is explored for regions with a sparse observation network. The method uses interpolated waveforms at virtual stations to construct the complete wavefront for tsunami propagation. Its application to the 2009 Dusky Sound, New Zealand earthquake, and the 2015 Illapel earthquake revealed that adopting virtual stations greatly improved the tsunami forecasting accuracy for regions without a dense observation network. Finally, a real-time tsunami detection algorithm using Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) is presented. The tsunami signals of the offshore bottom pressure gauge can be automatically separated from the tidal components, seismic waves, and background noise. The algorithm could detect tsunami arrival with a short detection delay and accurately characterize the tsunami amplitude. Furthermore, the tsunami data assimilation approach is combined with the real-time tsunami detection algorithm, which is applied to the tsunami of the 2016 Fukushima earthquake. The proposed tsunami data assimilation approach can be put into practice with the help of the real-time tsunami detection algorithm.

Download or read book The Hilbert Huang Transform in Engineering written by Norden E. Huang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-06-23 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data used to develop and confirm models suffer from several shortcomings: the total data is too limited, the data are non-stationary, and the data represent nonlinear processes. The Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) is a relatively new method that has grown into a robust tool for data analysis and is ready for a wide variety of applications. Thi

Book Practical Seismic Data Analysis

Download or read book Practical Seismic Data Analysis written by Hua-Wei Zhou and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This modern introduction to seismic data processing in both exploration and global geophysics demonstrates practical applications through real data and tutorial examples. The underlying physics and mathematics of the various seismic analysis methods are presented, giving students an appreciation of their limitations and potential for creating models of the sub-surface. Designed for a one-semester course, this textbook discusses key techniques within the context of the world's ever increasing need for petroleum and mineral resources - equipping upper undergraduate and graduate students with the tools they need for a career in industry. Examples presented throughout the text allow students to compare different methods and can be demonstrated using the instructor's software of choice. Exercises at the end of sections enable students to check their understanding and put the theory into practice and are complemented by solutions for instructors and additional case study examples online to complete the learning package.

Book Critical Review Of Van A Earthquake Prediction From Seismic Electrical Signals

Download or read book Critical Review Of Van A Earthquake Prediction From Seismic Electrical Signals written by James Lighthill and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-02-12 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acronym VAN refers to Drs Varotsos, Alexopoulos and Nomicos, members of a group based in the University of Athens and led by Professor Varotsos (head of the Physics Department) which for over a decade has sought to use electric-field measurements between electrodes buried in the earth to predict earthquakes in Greece over periods of order one month or less. But is such “short-term” prediction achievable by the VAN approach (or by any other)? This book is an objective collection of the arguments for — and the counterarguments against — that approach, intended to help scientific readers arrive at their own answers to this important question, as well as to others (including that of VAN's “export” potential).
