Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative case for historical ambiguity in architecture by one of the field's leading theorists Conceptions of modernity in architecture are often expressed in the idea of the zeitgeist, or "spirit of the age," an attitude toward architectural form that is embedded in a belief in progressive time. Lateness explores how architecture can work against these linear currents in startling and compelling ways. In this incisive book, internationally renowned architect Peter Eisenman, with Elisa Iturbe, proposes a different perspective on form and time in architecture, one that circumvents the temporal constraints on style that require it to be "of the times"—lateness. He focuses on three twentieth-century architects who exhibited the qualities of lateness in their designs: Adolf Loos, Aldo Rossi, and John Hejduk. Drawing on the critical theory of Theodor Adorno and his study of Beethoven's final works, Eisenman shows how the architecture of these canonical figures was temporally out of sync with conventions and expectations, and how lateness can serve as a form of release from the restraints of the moment. Bringing together architecture, music, and philosophy, and drawing on illuminating examples from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Lateness demonstrates how today's architecture can use the concept of lateness to break free of stylistic limitations, expand architecture's critical capacity, and provide a new mode of analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A groundbreaking history of digital design from the nineteenth century to todayDigital design has emerged as perhaps the most dynamic force in society, occupying a fluid, experimental space where product design intersects with art, film, business, engineering, theater, music, and artificial intelligence. Stephen Eskilson traces the history of digital design from its precursors in the nineteenth century to its technological and cultural ascendency today, providing a multifaceted account of a digital revolution that touches all aspects of our lives. We live in a time when silicon processors, miniaturization, and CAD-enhanced 3D design have transformed the tangible world of cars and coffee makers as well as the screen world on our phones, computers, and game systems. Eskilson provides invaluable historical perspective to help readers better understand how digital design has become such a vibrant feature of the contemporary landscape. Along the way, he paints compelling portraits of key innovators behind this transformation, from foundational figures such as Marshall McLuhan, Nam June Paik, and April Greiman to those mapping new frontiers, such as Sepandar Kamvar, Jeanne Gang, Karim Rashid, Neri Oxman, and Jony Ive.Bringing together an unprecedented array of sources on digital design, this comprehensive and richly illustrated book reveals how many of the digital practices we think of as the cutting-edge actually originated in the analog age and how the history of digital design is as much about our changing relationship to forms as the forms themselves"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sense of harmony and proportion has traditionally been achieved in architectural compositions by using the dimensions of the human body as the starting point. Modern technology now enables us to go beyond these physical dimensions into a virtual world, and this poses a challenge to architecture as we usually perceive it. Interactive, flexible and intelligent models are being called for. Whilst technology is taking us into the realms of virtual reality, architecture on the other hand, is becoming more corporeal. "Postorganic" is the term being used to express this merging of the body and architecture brought about by electronic media. A radical change in perspective is blurring the distinction between the organic and mechanic, and the artificial logic of the computer and the natural logic of man are fusing together

Book excerpt: A bold, theoretical look at an emerging generation of architects, this volume is devoted to five contemporary architects—Bureau Spectacular, Erin Besler, Fake Industries Architectural Agonism, Formlessfinder, and John Szot Studio—and the diverse methods and approaches that drive their work. Chatter, whose title refers to the disjointed bits of conversation typified by texting and Twitter, examines how contemporary modes of communication have influenced the construction of ideas in the development, production, and presentation of architecture. Karen Kice surveys the evolution of architecture and illuminates how these architects have developed their work in conversation with historical theories and projects. Using a range of representational methods and formats to explore ideas—from hand drawings to robot-enabled ones, graphic novels to digital simulations—these practitioners embrace contemporary technologies while they engage with history. Kice's essay, accompanied by portfolios of works from each studio, deftly elucidates how these practitioners talk back to the past while conceiving and communicating their unique designs.

Book The IT Revolution in Architecture Thoughts on a Paradigm Shift

Download or read book The IT Revolution in Architecture Thoughts on a Paradigm Shift written by Antonino Saggio and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-11-29 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information Technology is imposing itself as the central paradigm for a new phase in all of architecture; the dynamic interconnections at the heart of IT are being transferred from the world of digital models to the reality of a reactive, sensitive, interactive architecture. The structure chosen for this book was to avoid a "crib sheet" on the "IT Revolution in Architecture." The formula of the "treatise" was just as impossible to use not only because many aspects of contemporary scientific research are oriented toward a structure that remains intentionally open and serves to launch new hypotheses rather than solidify certainties, but also because this aspect is reinforced by the material that by its nature finds itself in an free, interconnected, intrinsically problematic dimension.

We are surrounded by objects which are causing our relationship with the world around us to become increasingly intangible and virtual. Even the work of the designer is changing: coupled with the traditional principles of aesthetics and practicality, concepts such as communication, multimedia, virtuality are now important tools of the trade. Today's designers are confronted with a variety of complex demands and the computer offers an extremely flexible and creative way of meeting them. This book examines the many developments and changes which the digital age has effected in the field of design.

Book Intermedialities

  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book Intermedialities written by Henk Oosterling and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars, Intermedialities: Philosophy, Arts, Politics is a comprehensive collection devoted to the new field of research called 'intermedialities.' The concept of intermedialities stresses the necessity of situating philosophical and political debates on social relations in the divergent contexts of media theories, avant-garde artistic practices, continental philosophy, feminism, and political theory. The 'intermedial' approach to social relations does not focus on the shared identity but instead on the epistemological, ethical, and political status of inter (being-in-between). At stake here are the political analyses of new modes of being in common that transcend national boundaries, the critique of the new forms of domination that accompany them, and the search for new emancipatory possibilities. Opening a new approach to social relations, intermedialities investigates not only engagements between already constituted positions but even more the interval, antagonism, and differences that form and decenter these positions. Consequently, in opposition to the resurgence of cultural and ethnic particularisms and to the leveling of difference produced by globalization, the political and ethical analysis of the 'in-between' enables a conception of community based on difference, exposure, and interaction with others rather than on an identification with a shared identity. Investigations of 'in-betweenness,' both as medium specific and between heterogeneous 'sites' of inquiry, range here from philosophical conceptuality to artistic practices, from the political circulation of money and power to the operation of new technologies. They inevitably invoke the crucial role of embodiment in creative thought and collective acting. As a mediating instance between the psyche and society, matter and spirit, nature and culture, and biology and technology, the body is another interval forming and informed by socio-linguistic relations. As these complex intersections between media, materiality, art, and the philosophy and politics of the in-between suggest, the project of intermedialities provides new ways of rethinking relations among arts, politics, and science.
