The conference was one in the series of international meetings of the Seminaire Sud Rhodanien de Goometrie, an organization of geometers and mathematical physicists at the Universities of Avignon, Lyon, Mar seille, and Montpellier. The scientific interests of Souriau, one of the founders of geometric quantization, range from classical mechanics (symplectic geometry) and quantization problems to general relativity and astrophysics. The themes of this conference cover "only" the first two of these four areas. The subjects treated in this volume could be classified in the follow ing way: symplectic and Poisson geometry (Arms-Wilbour, Bloch-Ratiu, Brylinski-Kostant, Cushman-Sjamaar, Dufour, Lichnerowicz, Medina, Ouzilou), classical mechanics (Benenti, Holm-Marsden, Marle) , particles and fields in physics (Garcia Perez-Munoz Masque, Gotay, Montgomery, Ne'eman-Sternberg, Sniatycki) and quantization (Blattner, Huebschmann, Karasev, Rawnsley, Roger, Rosso, Weinstein). However, these subjects are so interrelated that a classification by headings such as "pure differential geometry, applications of Lie groups, constrained systems in physics, etc. ," would have produced a completely different clustering! The list of authors is not quite identical to the list of speakers at the conference. M. Karasev was invited but unable to attend; C. Itzykson and M. Vergne spoke on work which is represented here only by the title of Itzykson's talk (Surfaces triangulees et integration matricielle) and a summary of Vergne's talk.

Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "Algebraic K-theory and Algebraic Topology" was held at Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada from December 12 to December 16 of 1991. This book is the volume of proceedings for this meeting. The papers that appear here are representative of most of the lectures that were given at the conference, and therefore present a "snapshot" of the state ofthe K-theoretic art at the end of 1991. The underlying objective of the meeting was to discuss recent work related to the Lichtenbaum-Quillen complex of conjectures, fro~ both the algebraic and topological points of view. The papers in this volume deal with a range of topics, including motivic cohomology theories, cyclic homology, intersection homology, higher class field theory, and the former telescope conjecture. This meeting was jointly funded by grants from NATO and the National Science Foun dation in the United States. I would like to take this opportunity to thank these agencies for their support. I would also like to thank the other members of the organizing com mittee, namely Paul Goerss, Bruno Kahn and Chuck Weibel, for their help in making the conference successful. This was the second NATO Advanced Study Institute to be held in this venue; the first was in 1987. This is one of the main results of the 254 page paper below (practically a book in itself) by Gerstenhaber and Shack entitled "Algebraic cohomology and defor mation theory". Two of the main philosphical-methodological pillars on which deformation theory rests are the fol lowing • (Pure) To study a highly complicated object, it is fruitful to study the ways in which it can arise as a limit of a family of simpler objects: "the unraveling of complicated structures" . • (Applied) If a mathematical model is to be applied to the real world there will usually be such things as coefficients which are imperfectly known. Thus it is important to know how the behaviour of a model changes as it is perturbed (deformed).

The aim of the book is to give an introduction to the perturbative path integral for gauge theories (in particular, topological field theories) in Batalin–Vilkovisky formalism and to some of its applications. To elucidate the picture, the exposition is mostly focused on finite-dimensional models for gauge systems and path integrals, while giving comments on what has to be amended in the infinite-dimensional case relevant to local field theory. Those occurring physically can be studied as essentially algebraic and closely related to the deformation theory of algebras (commutative, Lie, Hopf, and so on). One of the oldest forms of algebraic quantization amounts to the study of deformations of a commutative algebra A (of classical observables) to a noncommutative algebra A*h (of operators) with the infinitesimal deformation given by a Poisson bracket on the original algebra A. This volume grew out of an AMS--IMS--SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference, held in June 1990 at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The conference brought together leading researchers in the several areas mentioned and in areas such as ``q special functions'', which have their origins in the last century but whose relevance to modern physics has only recently been understood. Among the advances taking place during the conference was Majid's reconstruction theorem for Drinfel$'$d's quasi-Hopf algebras. Readers will appreciate this snapshot of some of the latest developments in the mathematics of quantum groups and deformation theory.

Schwede's exact sequence interpretation of the Gerstenhaber bracket in Hochschild cohomology to certain exact and monoidal categories. Therefore the author establishes an explicit description of an isomorphism by A. Neeman and V. Retakh, which links Ext-groups with fundamental groups of categories of extensions and relies on expressing the fundamental group of a (small) category by means of the associated Quillen groupoid. As a main result, the author shows that his construction behaves well with respect to structure preserving functors between exact monoidal categories. The author uses his main result to conclude, that the graded Lie bracket in Hochschild cohomology is an invariant under Morita equivalence. For quasi-triangular bialgebras, he further determines a significant part of the Lie bracket's kernel, and thereby proves a conjecture by L. Menichi. Along the way, the author introduces n-extension closed and entirely extension closed subcategories of abelian categories, and studies some of their properties.
