Book excerpt: Differential cross sections of the reaction 4He(t, n)6Li, including some data of the first and second excited states of 6Li, were measured and compared with an R-matrix analysis of previous data in the 7Li system. Excellent agreement is observed for the angular distribution at the 0.24-MeV resonance of n-6Li, and the shape of the angular distribution for 4He(t, n1)6Li at 12.9 MeV is predicted qualitatively by the R-matrix analysis. However, for neutron energies greater than 0.5 MeV for 6Li(n, t)4He the zero-degree excitation function is consistently lower (about 30%) in the R-matrix analysis.

Book excerpt: The activation method was used to measure cross sections for the 51V(n, .cap alpha.)48Sc reaction in the threshold region, from 5.515 MeV up to 9.567 MeV. Twenty approximately-monoenergetic cross section values were obtained in this experiment. These data points span the energy region at roughly equal intervals. The experimental resolutions were in the range 0.153 to 0.233 MeV (FWHM). The present differential data cover approx. 50% of the total integral response of this reaction for the standard 235U thermal-neutron-induced-fission neutron spectrum, and approx. 44% of the corresponding response for the standard 252Cf spontaneous-fission neutron spectrum. Over the range 7.6 to 9.5 MeV the present experimental cross sections are noticeably larger (e.g., by approx. 50% at approx. 8.6 MeV) than the corresponding values from the ENDF/B-V evaluation. From approx. 6.7 to 7.5 MeV, the present values are somewhat below those of ENDF/B-V. At still lower energies the agreement is reasonably good considering the uncertainties introduced by energy scale definition very near the effective threshold where the cross section varies rapidly with neutron energy. Calculated integral cross sections based in part on the present work agree reasonably well within errors with reported integral results, provided that the reported data are renormalized to conform with recently-accepted values for appropriate standard reactions. 70 references.

Book excerpt: Absolute differential cross sections are pre sented for the reactions C12(Li6,p)O17 (ground state and first three excited states) and C12(Li6,d)O16 (ground state), for laboratory energies from 3.4 to 4.0 MeV. Total cross sec tions are about 1 mb at 4.0 MeV. Fluctuations in the angular distributions and total cross sections suggest that the reactions proceed via the compound nucleus F18 which is excited to the region of over-lapping levels. This is in con trast to the predominantly direct character of the previously studied reaction C12(Li6, alpha) N14. (Author).
