And some of the artists' writings portray a picture far different from their well-known paintings, sculptures and photographs. Different Travellers, Different Eyes includes memoirs by: Titian R. Peale, George Catlin, Alfred Jacob Miller, John James Audubon, Father Nicolas Point, Paul Kane, Samuel Chamberlain, Frank Marryat, Solomon Nunes Carvalho, Balduin Mollhausen, Worthington Whittredge, William Keith, Kicking Bear (Mato Wanahtaka), Mary Hallock Foote, Frederic Remington, Thomas Moran, Emily Carr, Ernest L. Book Through Different Eyes

Download or read book Through Different Eyes written by J. Barbara Alvord and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004-03-14 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when a meagerly-educated peasant girl is chosen in 1903 to leave her family and accompany her illiterate godfather from Europe to the Midlands of America? Young Anna Barbara Mrkvicka left the dirt floor of her over-crowded one room home to enter an unknown world and overwhelming challenges at every turn. Through Different Eyes describes the back-breaking peasant life of that era. Anna worked in the fields at six years of age. It travels with the young peasant in steerage on a daunting ocean voyage, and it reveals the frustrating immigrant experience of Ellis Island. It explores the sounds and smells of sleeping for six weeks on steamy tenement rooftops of New York Citys dangerous Lower East Side, sometimes with a knife handy for protection. The journey includes a lengthy train ride into the Heartland of the United States, reveals the anxiety of arriving to work with strangers on an isolated farmstead in early Iowa. With no way to learn the English language of America, for three hard years the frightened girl was unable to escape an abusive step-aunt. She was neither paid for her exhausting farm work nor allowed enough to eat; she was beaten. Yet Anna not only miraculously survived her ordeals, her grit and determination at last enabled her to bring all seven members of her family and a foster brother to Iowa in 1909. It was just in time; World War I was threatening to engulf Europe. After years of research, this creative biography honors all unsung immigrants like young Anna. It pays homage to the millions of men and women who desperately struggled to transplant their family lives to the freedom of Americatheir precious gift to those of us so privileged to be citizens of this great land.

Book excerpt: Blue Eriksen is a famous forensic archaeologist based at Northwestern University. She and her team are traveling the globe, testing mummies to research the use of hallucinogens in the development of ancient religions. Armed with evidence from ancient peoples, Blue has become convinced that psilocybin--a hallucinogen derived from mushrooms--can prevent or cure drug addiction. She hopes to develop testing and treatment centers. Leeuwarden Associates is the cover name for a deeply secret international organization that facilitates the production, delivery, and sale of illegal drugs worldwide, much as OPEC facilitates the sale of oil. Leeuwarden considers Blue a long-term threat and sends Felix Hacker--one of their enforcers--to kill her. Blue has no idea she's being stalked and prepares for a dig high in the Peruvian mountains... Book Erika Sutter Seen with Other Eyes

Download or read book Erika Sutter Seen with Other Eyes written by Gertrud Stiehle and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swiss ophthalmologist Erika Sutter was born in Basel in 1917. She spent 32 years working in Elim Hospital, founded by the Swiss Mission in an impoverished rural area in North-Eastern South Africa. Together with her African colleague and friend, Selina Maphorogo, she founded the Care Groups, village self-help groups working for better health in their communities. The movement is still active after more than 30 years, and now has around 2,000 members, mostly women, in over 200 villages. Erika Sutter has received numerous international honours and awards for her pioneering work, including the award Woman of the Year in 1984 from the South African newspaper The Star, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel. For the creation of this biography, Erika Sutter spent many hours with the author, her friend Gertrud Stiehle, telling the story of her long life vividly, with a sharp eye for social issues, a hint of self-irony, and dry wit. Her account does not ignore events in the wider world. She experienced life on the Swiss-German border during the Second World War, and her years of working in South Africa were those when the apartheid policies of the South African Government were becoming more and more repressive, affecting many aspects of life in the country.

Book The Invisible City

Download or read book The Invisible City written by Kyle Gillette and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Invisible City explores urban spaces from the perspective of a traveller, writer, and creator of theatre to illuminate how cities offer travellers and residents theatrical visions while also remaining mostly invisible, beyond the limits of attention. The book explores the city as both stage and content in three parts. Firstly, it follows in pattern Italo Calvino's novel Invisible Cities, wherein Marco Polo describes cities to the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan, to produce a constellation of vignettes recalling individual cities through travel writing and engagement with artworks. Secondly, Gillette traces the Teatro Potlach group and its ongoing immersive, site-specific performance project Invisible Cities, which has staged performances in dozens of cities across Europe and the Americas. The final part of the book offers useful exercises for artists and travellers interested in researching their own invisible cities. Written for practitioners, travellers, students, and thinkers interested in the city as site and source of performance, The Invisible City mixes travelogue with criticism and cleverly combines philosophical meditations with theatrical pedagogy.

Book Great Cities Through Travelers Eyes

Download or read book Great Cities Through Travelers Eyes written by Peter Furtado and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging anthology of travelers’ accounts in thirty-eight of the world’s most fascinating cities, from ancient times through the twentieth century. This entertaining new anthology includes travelers’ tales from thirty-eight cities spread over six continents, ranging from Beijing to Berlin, Cairo to Chicago, and Rio to Rome. The volume features commentators across the millennia, including the great travelers of ancient times, such as Greek geographer Strabo; those who undertook extensive journeys in the medieval world, not least Marco Polo; courageous women such as Isabella Bird and Freya Stark; and enterprising writers and journalists, including Mark Twain. We see the work of famous travelers, but also stories by ordinary people who found themselves involved in remarkable situations, like the medieval Chinese abbot who was shown around the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris by the king of France. Some of the writers seek to provide a straightforward, accurate description of all they have seen, while others concentrate on their subjective experiences of the city and encounters with the inhabitants. Introduced and contextualized by bestselling historian Peter Furtado, each account provides both a vivid portrait of a distant place and time and an insight into those who journeyed there. The result is a book that delves into the splendors and stories that exist beyond conventional guidebooks and websites.
