Book excerpt: This paper presents a critical review of the theoretical basis and empirical evidence for the popular practitioner idea that there are generational differences in work values. The concept of generations has a strong basis in sociological theory, but the academic empirical evidence for generational differences in work values is, at best, mixed. Many studies are unable to find the predicted differences in work values, and those that do often fail to distinguish between generation and age as possible drivers of such observed differences. In addition, the empirical literature is fraught with methodological limitations through the use of cross-sectional research designs in most studies, confusion about the definition of a generation as opposed to a cohort, and a lack of consideration for differences in national context, gender and ethnicity. Given the multitude of problems inherent in the evidence on generational differences in work values, it is not clear what value the notion of generations has for practitioners, and this may suggest that the concept be ignored. Ultimately, it may not matter to practitioners whether differences in the values of different birth cohorts reflect true generational effects, provided one can reliably demonstrate that these differences do exist. However, at present this is not the case, and therefore significant research is required first to disentangle cohort and generational effects from those caused by age or period. The suggestion that different groups of employees have different values and preferences, based on both age and other factors such as gender, remains a useful idea for managers; but a convincing case for consideration of generation as an additional distinguishing factor has yet to be made.

Similar problems of cross-cultural comparability also arise when comparing data from other sources, such as health registers, and are just as complex and difficult to tackle. One of the main advantages of health surveys, however, is the relatively low cost and time involved in adapting them according to the needs of health policy-makers. This work shows that the output from the EUROHIS project provides common instruments for the measurement of eight health indicators. The development of these instruments has required careful consideration of relevant common concepts and how these should be defined and operationalized. The instruments are freely available for use by all countries, with the aim of enhancing national health information systems and facilitating cross-national comparisons of health data.

Book excerpt: In this study, the relation between John Hollands (1997) career interests and Donald Supers (1990) work values were examined in order to extend the integrative framework known as the Atlas Model of Individual Differences (Armstrong et al., 2008). Additionally, in order to update outdated and contradictory literature, differences in work values across generation, race, and between genders were examined. A secondary data set including 1,960 respondents was obtained from Kuder, Inc. Canonical correlation analysis was used to examine work value and career interest relations, while MANOVA was conducted to investigate work value differences across demographic identities. Results showed there were multiple small to moderate relations between career interests and work values. Results also showed there were overall differences in work values across generation, race, and between genders; though some differences are minimal (generation) and some differences are contrary to previous research (race). Implications for career counselors, counselor educators, and professionals in industry are discussed, as well as areas for future research.
