"Traditional," in a Native American sense, means multiple interconnections of emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual identity that combine to define expectations for the Native American way. This traditional cultural perspective is often in conflict with college cultures where typically only the academic or social aspects of identity are addressed. Research on college students of several ethnicities has found that the experience of post-secondary education can change individuals' attitudes, values, and behaviors. However, none of these studies focused on the experience of Native American students. This study attempted to determine how students' with a traditional Native American upbringing feel that their attitudes, values, and behaviors have been changed by exposure to the Western culture of a college environment, and further, whether this potential change was a factor in their academic persistence. In order to begin to explore Native American students' experiences of recognizing and negotiating differences of culture, attitudes, and values, this study analyzed unstructured qualitative interviews of 15 Native American college students. Themes resulting from the analysis of texts that describe the students' experiences included class differences, feeling academically unprepared, lifestyle differences, desire to disprove negative stereotypes, importance of finding supportive others, experiences of greater diversity, experiences of cultural tension, changes in viewpoint, increased independence, and an increased desire to give back to their native communities.

Book excerpt: The current study evaluated the factor analytic structure and developmental trajectory of ethnic identity, as measured by the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure, (MEIM) among early rural adolescents. The convergent validity of the measure for rural youth was also examined. The sample for this study was drawn from a larger longitudinal study focusing on violence prevention efforts with an early adolescent sample residing in rural Florida. The final sample size for these secondary analyses was 5,695 participants. The sample was 53 % Caucasian, 24% Latino, 15% African American, and 8% Other. The mean age of the students was 11.3 years. Data were collected at seven time points. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted with the entire sample to determine whether a two-factor model was a satisfactory fit for the entire sample at Times 1-7. Individual growth curve modeling was used to determine ethnic identity trajectories. This study demonstrated that the MEIM taps into two factors (Exploration and Commitment) for rural adolescents. Moreover, the findings demonstrated multigroup equivalence across waves 1-7 of data collection for the Caucasian, African American, and Latino groups. Further, results from the growth curve modeling procedures indicated that Caucasian participants demonstrated a greater increase in Exploration relative to Latino and African American participants. Lastly, results from the convergent validity analyses indicated that Commitment was negatively related to attitudes towards violence and positively related towards attitudes towards nonviolence. Implications for future research and prevention programs that incorporate ethnic identity constructs are discussed.

Book excerpt: This dissertation study focused on a mixed-methods exploration of Native American students' perceptions of risks and protective factors as they transitioned to college at a predominately White institution (PWI), and navigated through their first year. Due to low numbers of Native Americans at PWIs, individuals have described feeling invisible, which negatively impacts their ethnic identity development, sense of belonging, wellbeing, and retention in college. Factors involving respect, positive relationships, cultural affirmation, and resiliency are associated with success and retention for Native American students. A mixed-methods model, guided by grounded theory and principles of social justice advocacy provided a reflection on Native American first time freshmen's perceived concerns related to transition as well as their coping efforts. Selection criteria included: (a) 18 years or older, (b) primary identification as Native American, and (c) enrollment in first semester of college. Eight interviews were conducted during Fall 2012 (September -- October). Additional interviews were conducted during Fall 2013 (September - October) for a total of 10 original interviews and 2 follow-up interviews. Quantitative measures included the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale, the Native American Acculturation Scale, and the Bicultural Self-Efficacy Scale. Results suggested that all participants experienced anxiety during the first month and a half of their first year. No significant relationships between transition anxiety and measures of attachment, acculturation, or bicultural self-efficacy were found. Participants initially utilized established relationships with family and close others, primarily off-campus, to cope with concerns related to transition. As they became more familiar with campus culture through positive interactions with faculty, staff, teaching assistants, resident advisors, and classmates, participants described becoming less anxious. The reduction in anxiety occurred within their first month and a half on campus. Participants began to seek out academic and student services resources, and to form new connections with classmates, and other peers on campus. These early positive interactions lead to a sense of belonging. Through reflection on these early experiences, participants became more self-sufficient, and resilient. They identified new coping strategies for future concerns. This process also increased interest in further exploring Native American culture for some participants.

Book excerpt: In this study, I examined relationship among social identity and attitudinal variables and academic achievement in a group of 128 American Indian (AI) high school students. Analyses were first conducted in order to explore whether AI students differed from European American (EA) students on measures of ethnic identity, school identification, perceived barriers, perceived discrimination, and abstract, concrete, and ambivalent educational utility. With the exception of school identification, statistically significant differences and large effect sizes between the AI and EA participants were found on all major variables, with the AI participants reporting higher scores on all measures except GPA. EA participants reported a higher GPA. Additional analyses explored the contribution of ethnic identity towards the variance of AI students' GPA and school identification beyond the contribution from perceived barriers, perceived discrimination, and abstract, concrete, and ambivalent educational utility. Ethnic identity was a significant predictor of school identification. None of the variables, including ethnic identity, was a significant predictor of GPA. Final analysis explored the existence of clusters of AI participants based on ethnic identity and school identification. Two groups of AI students who varied on their level of school identification were identified. These groups did not differ on all major variables. I suggest that many of the statistically in-significant findings are due to the ethnically homogeneous context in which the AI participants come from. I argue that ethnicity-related attitudinal and social identity variables are more important predictors of achievement in contexts in which ethnicity is more salient, and are less important in heterogeneous populations.

Book excerpt: Native Americans in the U.S. grapple with ongoing effects of colonization on culture, socioeconomic opportunities, political and spiritual systems, communities and families, and health. Historical trauma or loss is one such health stressor facing Native American communities today (Gone et al., 2019). Informed by prior research and Indigenous understandings of health, the Indigenist Stress-Coping Model (Walters et al., 2011) posits that cultural sources of resilience buffer the impacts of stressors such as historical loss. This study tested theorized pathways of the Indigenist Stress-Coping Model among a national sample of 242 Native American college students. Survey data was analyzed using structural equation modeling to examine the theorized relationships among historical loss, well-being, psychological distress, and cultural buffers of enculturation and ethnic identity. Partial support was found for the Indigenist-Stress Coping Model. Participants reported frequent thoughts of historical loss, which was associated with lower well-being and higher levels of psychological distress. Moreover, ethnic identity moderated the relationship between historical loss and well-being such that those with stronger ethnic identities reported a weaker relationship between historical loss and well-being. Results underscore the importance of culturally specific risk and protective factors in Native American college students' resiliency and inform needed interventions and systemic change in higher education.
