Book English Electric Class 50 Diesels

Download or read book English Electric Class 50 Diesels written by Peter Green and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter J Green first photographed Class 50 diesels in action in 1975, while they were still being transferred from the London Midland to the Western Region of British Rail. But it was in the early 1980s, when they were named and painted in Large Logo livery, that his interest in the class really took off. For Peter, they stood out from most other locomotives that were painted in the rather drab Rail Blue livery. The sound of the locomotives, particularly when running at speed, was also very impressive, producing shouts of '50!' from waiting photographers, even before the train was in sight. The class became a particular target for his railway photography and many of his trips were made with them in mind. They regularly worked trains around his home town of Worcester, so if he did not want to go too far, it was easy to find a satisfactory subject at which to point his camera. Before their withdrawal in the late 1980s and early 1990s, they were used on many railtours, which always provided good photographic opportunities. Today, with many of the class working on heritage railways, and a number of privately owned locomotives registered for main line use, there is still plenty to keep his cameras occupied. A selection of Peter’s best photos of the Class 50 diesels, taken over a period of forty-five years, appear in these pages.

Book Diesels in the Midlands

Download or read book Diesels in the Midlands written by Derek Huntriss and published by . This book was released on 2004-06 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Midlands, the traditional industrial heartland of Britain, was inevitably the centre of an impressive network of railway lines. It was also the home of one of the most important non-BR manufacturers of diesel-locomotives in the form of the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. With a number of significant lines running through the region, in addition to the complex local network, it was inevitable, from the earliest days of modernisation, that the region would see the rapid introduction of modern traction. The suburban services on the GWR main line were amongst the first to be converted, whilst the main line services themselves were to see the introduction of the blue Pullmans, a stopgap measure whilst the West Coast route was modernised. Elsewhere the Nottingham area was to become the home for the first of the 'Peaks', which were allocated to Toton for virtually their entire working lives.Drawing upon the collections of many of the notable photographers who were recording the changing railway scene in the Midlands during the late 1950s and 1960s, Derek Huntriss has selected some 85 colour illustrations that portray graphically the rise of modern traction in the region during these decades. Of the locomotives and multipleunits illustrated, many are now as much a part of history as the steam engines they were destined to replace, victims of the rapid reduction in the size of the railway network in the years following the Beeching Report and the replacement of older types by the second generation of diesel power. Allied to the author's detailed captions, the book recreates an era familiar to countless thousands of enthusiasts nationwide. As the first generation diesel-electric locomotives gradually fade into history, so interest in the so-called 'green diesel' era grows apace. Focusing upon the relevant period in the heartland of industrial Britain, Diesels in the Midlands is an evocative reminder of how far the railways have changed in a relatively short period.

Book The Metropolitan Vickers Type 2 Co Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives

Download or read book The Metropolitan Vickers Type 2 Co Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives written by Anthony P. Sayer and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough history of the Metropolitan-Vickers locomotive, also known as “Class 28,” featuring 160 color and black & white photos. This book provides an in-depth history of the Metropolitan-Vickers diesel-electric Type 2 locomotives, more frequently known collectively as the “Co-Bo’s” due to their unusual wheel arrangement. Twenty locomotives were constructed during the late-1950s for use on the London Midland Region of British Railways. The fleet was fraught with difficulties from the start, most notably due to problems with their Crossley engines, this necessitating the need for extensive rehabilitation work during the early-1960s. Matters barely improved and the option to completely re-engine the locomotives with English Electric units was debated at length, but a downturn in traffic levels ultimately resulted in their demise by the end of 1968 prior to any further major rebuilding work being carried out. Significant quantities of new archive and personal sighting information, supported by over 180 photographs and diagrams, have been brought together to allow dramatic new insights into this enigmatic class of locomotives, including the whole debate surrounding potential re-engining, their works histories, the extended periods in storage, together with in-depth reviews of the various detail differences and liveries.
