Download or read book The Challenge of Sustainability in Agricultural Systems written by Aleksei V. Bogoviz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-05 with total page 1058 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together segmental knowledge and creates new insights on the sustainability of agricultural systems, critically analyzing not only individual system components, but also focusing on interactions between them and external environments. This book is primarily devoted to (1) agricultural agribusiness, (2) policies and institutions, and (3) farming systems. The compelling collection of chapters presents critical, comparative, and balanced perspectives on what changes are needed to achieve and maintain sustainability in agricultural systems, actively leading to new ways of thinking about these complex issues. The research presented relies on an array of methods developed within complex systems science, addresses the existing gaps in the scholarship, and uses original data collected on the development of agricultural systems. Finally, the authors provide robust conclusions and recommendations for both scholars and practitioners in the field of studying, constructing, and maintaining sustainable agricultural systems. The special focus of the book is on technologies, policies, and management systems enabling sustainable agricultural development. A rich collection of practical cases could be used to move from theories to reality. The book appeals to both academics and professionals working in the field.

Download or read book Energy Policy written by Anthony David Owens and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-11-25 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy Policy is a component of the Encyclopedia of Energy Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources which is part of the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Energy policy addresses the economic, environmental, political, planning, and social aspects of energy supply and utilization that confront decision makers, corporate planners, managers, consultants, politicians, and researchers. Energy is of considerable importance given its strategic relevance as a raw material for industry, particularly energy intensive industries, for the quality of life, and for the creation of jobs. The level of energy prices is a critical factor in production costs and prices, and consequently has an important impact on government policy relating to sustainable economic growth, job creation, and prosperity. The book provides a background on the theory and application of policy as it relates to the energy sector, particularly with respect to market failures and potential policy remedies to the energy/ environment dilemma. This volume is aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.

Download or read book The UK s energy supply written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Energy and Climate Change Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government must start thinking strategically about energy security to protect the UK's energy supply against short-term shocks and rising global energy prices, according to a report by MPs on the Energy and Climate Change Committee. Gas storage capacity needs to be increased in the UK to minimise the potential damage from supply interruptions or price spikes, the report argues. It reveals that the UK's current storage capacity amounts to only 14 days worth of gas supply - a dangerously low level compared with France which has 87 days worth of gas storage, Germany 69 and Italy 59. 19 gigawatts (GW) of ageing electricity plant will close by 2018 and the UK will become increasingly reliant on energy imports as North Sea oil and gas reserves decline. The report concludes that new electricity generation currently being built or planned will fill this "gap". But it urges the Government to ensure security of supply by delivering on its energy efficiency targets, rolling out smart meters - that can balance demand - and maintaining a diverse energy mix.
Download or read book Rural Energy Development in China written by Robert P. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this title, originally published in 1981, author Robert P. Taylor calls for a greater understanding of rural energy supply and consumption patterns in the developing countries. Here, Taylor specifically examines the rural energy development in China as it is the world’s largest developing country in terms of population, and it has encountered many of the rural energy problems common in other developing countries. This study provides an analysis of China’s rural energy economy from before 1949 to a general discussion of achievements in rural energy development and the rural energy economy in 1981. This is an ideal title for students interested in environmental studies and development studies.
