Book Recruitment of Atlantic Sturgeon and Shortnose Sturgeon Within the Savannah River Georgia and South Carolina

Download or read book Recruitment of Atlantic Sturgeon and Shortnose Sturgeon Within the Savannah River Georgia and South Carolina written by Alexander Jeffrey Cummins and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The endangered Atlantic (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) and Shortnose Sturgeons (A. brevirostrum) were once abundant within major rivers along North America's Atlantic coast from the St. John River, Canada and the St. Johns River, Florida. Anthropogenic factors such as over-harvest and habitat degradation have contributed to severe declines in populations of both species throughout their ranges. Despite both species being listed as endangered, significant gaps in scientific literature, particularly population demographics are still present. The objectives of this study are to quantify annual recruitment of juvenile Atlantic and Shortnose Sturgeons in the Savannah River, and to determine environmental drivers of recruitment. The results of this study provide baseline abundance data that will be critical in evaluating long-term population trends and for assessing the effects of dredging in the Savannah River. This study provides key information regarding long-term management of endangered Atlantic and Shortnose Sturgeon throughout the southern reaches of their range.

Book Population Characteristics of Atlantic Sturgeon and Shortnose Sturgeon in the Savannah River Georgia

Download or read book Population Characteristics of Atlantic Sturgeon and Shortnose Sturgeon in the Savannah River Georgia written by Derek Lawrence Bahr and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) and Shortnose Sturgeon (A. brevirostrum) once thrived along the Atlantic Coast of North America. Severe overfishing and habitat loss during the 1900s resulted in major population declines that led to the listing of both species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973. Presently, quantified abundance data is lacking for most systems, particularly at southerly latitudes. From 2013 to 2014, I collected mark-recapture data for both Shortnose and juvenile Atlantic Sturgeon occupying the Savannah River, Georgia. The results of this study provide the first quantified recruitment and abundance estimates for the Savannah River. These estimates are critical in evaluating the conservation status of these species and may allow researchers to evaluate trends in abundance and recruitment among and within rivers over time. Furthermore, the results of this study provide key information for proper management of these imperiled species in the southern portion of their range.

Book Environmental Assessment

Download or read book Environmental Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The current EA analyzed the effects of the proposed Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon research, which will be conducted in the waters of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. Specifically, the funded work would be used for: development, installation, and maintenance of an acoustic receiver array to track the movement of shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon in North Carolina (Roanoke, Chowan, Meherrin, and Cape Fear rivers), South Carolina (Savannah, Combahee, Edisto, Cooper, Santee, and Winyah Bay system), and Georgia (Altamaha, Ogeechee and Satilla rivers) rivers, coastal waters, and the Intracoastal Waterway; acoustic and satellite tagging and monitoring the movements of 20 to 30 (of each species) Atlantic sturgeon and shortnose sturgeon each year (i.e., 60 to 90 total per species over the life of the project) to identify and assess the use of spawning and other habitat and interbasin and coastal movements; development and testing of a less invasive procedure for aging of these two species based on relative DNA telomere length from small tissue samples; and participation in multiple types of stakeholder outreach efforts"--Cover letter.

Book Age Structure Reproduction and Recruitment of Atlantic Sturgeon Acipenser Oxyrinchus and Shortnose Sturgeon Acipenser Brevirostrum in the Cooper River South Carolina

Download or read book Age Structure Reproduction and Recruitment of Atlantic Sturgeon Acipenser Oxyrinchus and Shortnose Sturgeon Acipenser Brevirostrum in the Cooper River South Carolina written by Victoria Kate Ruddle and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the age structure, recruitment, and reproduction of two endangered anadromous fish species, Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) and Shortnose Sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum), in the Cooper River in South Carolina. The second marginal pectoral fin ray was evaluated as a new ageing technique, and validated in hatchery-raised Atlantic Sturgeon. There was no significant difference between side sampled (left vs. right pectoral fins) in Atlantic Sturgeon (n = 47, t = 0.000, p = 1.00) and Shortnose Sturgeon (n = 48, t = 1.1985, p = 0.2367). Shortnose Sturgeon sampled were estimated to be between 13 to 41 yrs old (N = 39) and Atlantic Sturgeon sampled were estimated to be between 3 to 21 yrs old (N = 9). Reproductive surveys resulted in one Shortnose Sturgeon egg collected in 2015 and 14 eggs collected in 2017. No Atlantic Sturgeon eggs were collected, but spawning adults were sampled at the spawning site in the Cooper River.

Book Environmental Assessment on the Effects of the Issuance of a Scientific Research Permit file No 14759 to Conduct Scientific Research on Shortnose Sturgeon in North Carolina Rivers

Download or read book Environmental Assessment on the Effects of the Issuance of a Scientific Research Permit file No 14759 to Conduct Scientific Research on Shortnose Sturgeon in North Carolina Rivers written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) proposes to issue a scientific research pennit (File No. 14759) to Joseph Hightower, Ph. D. (North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27695), to take shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum) in the wild for purposes of scientific research pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (ESA; 16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.). The applicant is seeking a five-year scientific research permit assessing the presence, abundance, and distribution of shortnose sturgeon within North Carolina river basins (Chowan, Roanoke, and Cape Fear and estuaries) and Albemarle Sound using non-lethal sampling methods. The researcher proposes to combine hydroacoustic surveys (using side-scan and DIDSON sonar) and gill nets, to annually capture, measure, weigh, genetic tissue sample, PIT tag and Floy tag up to 15 shortnose sturgeon annually from the Chowan and Cape Fear River Basins and Albemarle Sound. He also proposes similar activity capturing up to 25 shortnose sturgeon annually from the Roanoke River Basin. A sub-set of up to five sub-adults or adults from each river basin and Albemarle Sound would be anesthetized and implanted with internal sonic transmitters each year. Manual tracking and passive detections of telemetered fish at fixed receiver stations would provide infonnation about movement, seasonal distribution and habitat use"--Abstract (p. [1]).
