Book excerpt: The Age of Agade is the first book-length study of the Akkadian period of Mesopotamian history, which saw the rise and fall of the world's first empire during more than a century of extraordinary political, social, and cultural innovation. It draws together more than 40 years of research by one of the world's leading experts in Assyriology to offer an exhaustive survey of the Akkadian empire. Addressing all aspects of the empire, including its statecraft and military, territory and cities, arts, religion, economy, and production, The Age of Agadeconsiders what can be said of Akkadian political and social history, material culture, and daily life. A final chapter also explores how the empire has been presented in modern historiography, from the decipherment of cuneiform to the present, including the extensive research of Soviet historians, summarized here in English for the first time. Drawing on contemporaneous written and artifactual sources, as well as relevant materials from succeeding generations, Foster introduces the reader to the wealth of evidence available. Accessibly written by a specialist in the field, this book is an engaging examination of a critical era in the history of early Mesopotamia.

Book Gnostica Judaica Catholica Collected Essays of Gilles Quispel

Download or read book Gnostica Judaica Catholica Collected Essays of Gilles Quispel written by Gilles Quispel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-12-31 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a rich and varied collection of essays by Gilles Quispel (1916-2006), Professor of the History of the Early Church at Utrecht University from 1951 until his retirement in 1983. During his illustrious career, Professor Quispel was also visiting Professor at Harvard University in 1964/65, and visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven from 1969 until 1974. The fifty essays collected in this volume testify to most of the prominent themes from Professor Quispel’s scholarly career: the writings of the Nag Hammadi library in general and the Gospel of Thomas in particular; Tatian’s Diatessaron and its influences; the Hermetica; Mani and Manichaeism; the Jewish origins of Gnosticism; and Gnosis and the future of Christianity. This volume also makes a number of his less known earlier publications (mainly presented under the heading ‘Catholica’) available to the international community. Until shortly before he died, Professor Quispel remained active in his study of the Gospel of Thomas. He had been one of the first to acquire the Coptic text of the Gospel of Thomas, of which he published the first translation in 1959 and his final translation in 2005. He was also active in researching the Diatessaron, and Valentinus ‘the Gnostic’. One of his most recent essays – published for the first time in this volume – is on ‘the Muslim Jesus.’

Book Religion and Cultural Memory

Download or read book Religion and Cultural Memory written by Jan Assmann and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ten brilliant essays, Jan Assmann explores the connections between religion, culture, and memory. Building on Maurice Halbwachs's idea that memory, like language, is a social phenomenon as well as an individual one, he argues that memory has a cultural dimension too. He develops a persuasive view of the life of the past in such surface phenomena as codes, religious rites and festivals, and canonical texts on the one hand, and in the Freudian psychodrama of repressing and resurrecting the past on the other. Whereas the current fad for oral history inevitably focuses on the actual memories of the last century or so, Assmann presents a commanding view of culture extending over five thousand years. He focuses on cultural memory from the Egyptians, Babylonians, and the Osage Indians down to recent controversies about memorializing the Holocaust in Germany and the role of memory in the current disputes between Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East and between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland.

Book Jewish Symbols in the Greco Roman Period

Download or read book Jewish Symbols in the Greco Roman Period written by Erwin Ramsdell Goodenough and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the most important portions of Erwin Goodenough's classic thirteen-volume work, a magisterial attempt to encompass human spiritual history in general through the study of Jewish symbols in particular. Revealing that the Jewish religion of the period was much more varied and complex than the extant Talmudic literature would lead us to believe, Goodenough offered evidence for the existence of a Hellenistic-Jewish mystic mythology far closer to the Qabbalah than to rabbinical Judaism. Originally published in 1989. Book The Hurrians

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gernot Wilhelm
  • Publisher : Aris & Phillips
  • Release : 1989-12-01
  • ISBN : 9780856684890
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book The Hurrians written by Gernot Wilhelm and published by Aris & Phillips. This book was released on 1989-12-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hurrians were one of Ute principal contributors to ancient Near Eastern civilisation and yet we know fer less about their language, history and culture than we do about the Sumerians, Assyrians or Hittites. In this book, Professor Wilhelm has gathered the scattered threads from a great range of sources between 2500 and 500 BC, to give the first ever survey of the Hurrians. Professor Wilhelm is one of the world's principal authorities on Hurrian language and history, and the book is therefore highly authoritative, although written for the general reader. The text has been specially brought up to date by the author for this edition, and an extra chapter on the archaeology, with additional illustrations, has been contributed by Dr Diana Stein. The Hurrians is essential to everyone studying the ancient Near East, and provide a starting point for future research into this important civilisation.
