Um das Thema einzuleiten, werden zunächst die Begriffe ́Grammatik ́ und ́kontrastive Grammatik ́ definiert. Anschließend werden die Perspektiven und Meinungen der ersten Jahre dargestellt. Dann wird die Ausarbeitung auf die Entwicklungen in den neunziger Jahren eingehen, um abschließend eine zusammenfassenden Überblick zu formulieren. Im Studienbuch Linguistik wird ́Grammatik ́ als System oder auch strukturierendes Gebilde einer Sprache beschrieben, unter dem folgende Ebenen subsumiert werden: die der ́Laute ́, der ́Morpheme ́ und ́Wörter ́, der ́Sätze ́ und der ́Texte ́. Es wird zudem konstatiert, dass die eigentliche Substanz der klassischen Grammatik aus der ́Lehre vom Wort ́ und der ́Lehre vom Satz ́ besteht. In Bezug auf das ́Wort ́ beschäftigt sich die ́Grammatik ́ mit den Wortklassen, die nach grammatischen Regeln gebildet werden. Zu diesen Wortklassen gehören zum Einen Wörter, die eine gemeinsame morphologische Ausprägung aufweisen, so zum Beispiel konjugierbare Verben, und zum Anderen Wörter, die in der Syntax ihre Verwendung finden, dazu gehören unter anderem die „nebensatzeinleitenden subordinierenden Konjunktionen“ . Auch die Bildung von Wörtern und die verschiedenen Wortausprägungen gehören zur ́Lehre vom Wort ́ und werden unter dem Begriff ́Morphologie ́ gefasst. Die ́Lehre von Satz ́ beschäftigt sich mit den Regeln nach denen die Aneinanderreihung von Wörtern zu Satzgliedern und letztlich Sätzen oder auch komplexeren Satzgefügen erfolgen kann. Mit der ́Lehre des Satzes ́ werden zum Beispiel auch Satzbaupläne und Satzarten festgelegt.

It presents a detailed descriptive survey, using extensive examples collected from the Internet, of German verb constructions in which the expressions durch ('through'), über ('over'), unter ('under'), and um ('around') occur either as inseparable verb prefixes or as separable verb particles. Based on that evidence, the author argues that the prefixed verb constructions and particle verb constructions themselves have meaning, and that this meaning involves subjective construal processes rather than objective information. The constructions prompt us to distribute focal attention according to patterns that can be articulated in terms of Talmy's notion of perspectival modes. Among the other topics that play an important role in the analysis are incremental themes, reflexive trajectors, fictive motion, multi-directional paths, and accusative landmarks.

Book excerpt: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

Book excerpt: Traditional dialects have been encroached upon by the increasing mobility of their speakers and by the onslaught of national languages in education and mass media. Typically, older dialects are “leveling” to become more like national languages. This is regrettable when the last articulate traces of a culture are lost, but it also promotes a complex dynamics of interaction as speakers shift from dialect to standard and to intermediate compromises between the two in their forms of speech. Varieties of speech thus live on in modern communities, where they still function to mark provenance, but increasingly cultural and social provenance as opposed to pure geography. They arise at times from the need to function throughout the different groups in society, but they also may have roots in immigrants’ speech, and just as certainly from the ineluctable dynamics of groups wishing to express their identity to themselves and to the world. The future of dialects is a selection of the papers presented at Methods in Dialectology XV, held in Groningen, the Netherlands, 11-15 August 2014. While the focus is on methodology, the volume also includes specialized studies on varieties of Catalan, Breton, Croatian, (Belgian) Dutch, English (in the US, the UK and in Japan), German (including Swiss German), Italian (including Tyrolean Italian), Japanese, and Spanish as well as on heritage languages in Canada.
