Book Anglo Saxon England Volume 30

Download or read book Anglo Saxon England Volume 30 written by Michael Lapidge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-12 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pre-eminence of Anglo-Saxon England in its field can be seen as a result of its encouragement of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of all aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture. Thus this volume includes an important assessment of the correspondence of St Boniface, in which it is shown that the unusually formulaic nature of Boniface's letters is best understood as a reflex of the saint's familiarity with vernacular composition. A wide-ranging historical contextualization of The Letter of Alexander to Aristotle illuminates the way English readers of the later tenth century may have defined themselves in contradistinction to the monstrous unknown, and a fresh reading of the gendering of female portraiture in a famous illustrated manuscript of the Psychomachia of Prudentius (CCCC 23) shows the independent ways in which Anglo-Saxon illustrators were able to respond to their models. The usual comprehensive bibliography of the previous year's publications rounds off the book; and a full index of the contents of volumes 26-30 is provided. (Previous indexes have appeared in volumes 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25.)

Leaders in the field guide the reader through the process of modeling, creating an annotation language, building a corpus and evaluating it for correctness. Essential reading for both computer scientists and linguistic researchers.Linguistic annotation is an increasingly important activity in the field of computational linguistics because of its critical role in the development of language models for natural language processing applications. Part one of this book covers all phases of the linguistic annotation process, from annotation scheme design and choice of representation format through both the manual and automatic annotation process, evaluation, and iterative improvement of annotation accuracy. The second part of the book includes case studies of annotation projects across the spectrum of linguistic annotation types, including morpho-syntactic tagging, syntactic analyses, a range of semantic analyses (semantic roles, named entities, sentiment and opinion), time and event and spatial analyses, and discourse level analyses including discourse structure, co-reference, etc. Each case study addresses the various phases and processes discussed in the chapters of part one.

Download or read book Learned Love written by Els Stronks and published by Edita-The Publishing House of the Royal. This book was released on 2007 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emblem books, which feature combinations of images and text with a moral lesson for the reader, grew out of the Renaissance and were most popular in the Netherlands. Enigmatic, erudite, and often pious, Dutch love emblems synthesized the traditions of European visual and literary arts--and in turn influenced architecture, painting, poetry, and interior design for centuries to come. Learned Love offers an introduction to this enthralling genre and celebrates the completion of Emblem Project Utrecht, an undertaking that digitized twenty-five of the most representative emblem books. This unprecedented volume explores the delicate network of visual motifs and textual mottos that characterize Dutch love emblems. Learned Love demonstrates how emblem books form a web of closely interrelated references, which the contributors liken to the Internet, and traces the cutting-edge digitization project from inception to finish. This book will interest anyone intrigued by the fruitful gray areas between image and text, scholarship and technology.

Book Digital Histories

  • Author : Mats Fridlund
  • Publisher : Helsinki University Press
  • Release : 2020-12-07
  • ISBN : 9523690213
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Digital Histories written by Mats Fridlund and published by Helsinki University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical scholarship is currently undergoing a digital turn. All historians have experienced this change in one way or another, by writing on word processors, applying quantitative methods on digitalized source materials, or using internet resources and digital tools. Digital Histories showcases this emerging wave of digital history research. It presents work by historians who – on their own or through collaborations with e.g. information technology specialists – have uncovered new, empirical historical knowledge through digital and computational methods. The topics of the volume range from the medieval period to the present day, including various parts of Europe. The chapters apply an exemplary array of methods, such as digital metadata analysis, machine learning, network analysis, topic modelling, named entity recognition, collocation analysis, critical search, and text and data mining. The volume argues that digital history is entering a mature phase, digital history ‘in action’, where its focus is shifting from the building of resources towards the making of new historical knowledge. This also involves novel challenges that digital methods pose to historical research, including awareness of the pitfalls and limitations of the digital tools and the necessity of new forms of digital source criticisms. Through its combination of empirical, conceptual and contextual studies, Digital Histories is a timely and pioneering contribution taking stock of how digital research currently advances historical scholarship.

Book The Transformation of Economic Life under the Roman Empire

Download or read book The Transformation of Economic Life under the Roman Empire written by Lukas de Blois and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did a Roman imperial economy exist under the Late Republic, the Roman Principate and the Later Roman Empire? And if so, what type of economy was it? Another equally important question is: did the Roman Empire, by specific actions, the creation of infrastructures, or its very existence, trigger a transformation of economic life in the regions which it dominated? Or was the Empire a marginal affair in the regions that belonged to it, and did economic developments take their own course, independently of the Empire? Questions like these, which are of great consequence to any student of Roman history, archaeology, and Roman law, are treated in this volume, which in its successive parts focuses on: 1. The character of the Roman economy. 2. Economic life in particular regions of the Roman Empire. 3. The economy of the Later Roman Empire.
