Through 9 vignettes, this book illustrates technology-enhanced pedagogical practices that have been implemented in different artistic learning spaces including classroom, studio, and stage as well as institutional support strategies. With a naturalistic stance, these chapters seek to illuminate realistic pictures of teaching and learning that are being uncovered by artist educators as they sought to integrate technology within teaching practices using available technologies and within the classes that they are teaching. It is hoped that this book will stimulate conversation among artist educators about possible pedagogical models, as well as inform higher arts institutions about the contextual strategies needed to support the creation of technology-enhanced pedagogical practices.

Si l'enfant déborde d'imagination - tous les éducateurs et les parents le savent, - il ne peut trouver seul les moyens de s'exprimer : certaines conventions, l'absence de technique, de matériel, le freinent. C'est à l'élimination de ces entraves, que Noor-Zadé Brener s'applique dans son célèbre atelier et dans ce livre. Avec des matériaux ordinaires, peu coûteux, des conseils simples, des exemples amusants et beaucoup de patience affectueuse, sa méthode incite les enfants, dès le plus jeune âge, à découvrir leurs propres dons, à créer en toute liberté et - c'est important - à situer leurs travaux dans le contexte artistique de leur époque. Ce n'est pas le moindre mérite de cet ouvrage, en effet, que d'établir un parallèle constant entre la création enfantine et celle des artistes en renom : Picasso, Braque ou César, qui ont recherché, dans leur art, une spontanéité proche de celle des enfants. Mais cette présentation serait peu fidèle si elle n'insistait sur le sens du jeu, qui colore tout l'enseignement de Noor-Zadé Brener et qui a conquis déjà plusieurs générations de petits élèves. Nul doute que les parents et les éducateurs trouveront, dans ce "livre d'or", de multiples suggestions pour intéresser leurs enfants à la réalisation de petits chefs-d'œuvre.

Book excerpt: Since the 1970s, the landscape of higher education and research has been considerably altered by the integration of the arts within the university environment. Even though a form of research is inherent to artistic creation, the creative process is not comparable to the established procedures involved in academic research. As such, how can the imperatives of intellectual (and sometimes restrictive) rigour characteristic of scholarly endeavours be reconciled with the more explorative and intuitive approach of artistic creation? The concept of 'research-creation' allows artists and scholars to collaborate on a common project, acknowledging each participant’s expertise in the production of an artistic work that either generates theoretical reflections or has emerged from academic research. This fully revised and updated translation of Sophie Stévance and Serge Lacasse’s original French book offers an overview of the historical, political, social, cultural and academic contexts within which research-creation has emerged in Quebec and Canada, before similar (yet often divergent) conceptions appeared elsewhere in the world. Focussing primarily on the case of music, the book goes on to explore the pedagogical potential of research-creation within a university-based environment and proposes a clear and encompassing definition, as well as a theoretical model, of research-creation supported by concrete examples. By underscoring the reciprocal nature of this approach and the potential benefits of collaborative relationships, the authors’ vision of research-creation extends far beyond the field of music and art alone: rather, it has the potential to integrate all approaches and disciplines that seek to combine practice and research.
