Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over one hundred years, Pomeroy's was a beloved household name for the shoppers of central and eastern Pennsylvania. Founded in 1876, the store began under another name in Reading and soon expanded to Harrisburg, Pottsville and Wilkes-Barre. George Pomeroy bought out his partners in 1923, and Pomeroy's became known for its exemplary service and a devoted sales force. From the extraordinary window displays and the annual Christmas parade to a bite at the Tea Room, the stores were a social hub where sweethearts first met and families did their Saturday shopping. Though the final stores closed in 1990, the memories live on. Department store historian Michael Lisicky chronicles the history of Pomeroy's and takes readers back in time with reminiscences of former employees, interviews with store insiders and a selection of classic recipes.

Book excerpt: The recently married Bernie Mylin and his wife, Gwen, have relocated to the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, area and finds turmoil is once again building. Norma Harris, who has caused so much trouble in the past for the Mylin's, has reached out to Harrisburg from her prison cell in Germany. Arson, murders, and a kidnapping keeps Bernie on his toes, seeking answers. Bernie and Gwen call upon two of their friends from Cicero, Illinois, to contribute their help in catching a criminal. Meanwhile, Bernie must still manage an international standards department and hire engineers for two new major product families. At times the swirl of events almost becomes too much to bear. During the course of the story, Bernie Mylin, a Christian, must respond to questions and situations imposed by unbelieving co-workers. Questions of faith are considered as well as Bernie's attempt to witness to a member of a cult. David F. Rundle has had four books published previously. Two are nonfiction Bible study aids (Your Mirror Reflects Jacob and Grace and the Rebel Sigh) and two Christian murder mysteries titled A Spring Cicero Murder and The Bloodied Lambskin. David Rundle worked for thirty-five years in the electronic components industry as Product Engineering Manager and retired in 1998 as Global Product Standards Director. David Rundle's vision and desire is to write and publish fictional novels (mysteries) that include travel to international locations he has visited during his standardization efforts. These novels would also include aspects of electronic component engineering activities while presenting a Christian worldview dealing with everyday challenges faced by company employees. His hope is that the reader would be entertained while observing practical Christian living. David Rundle is a Christian and has served as Deacon, Elder, and teacher in the various churches he has attended.
Download or read book Did You Boscov Today written by Amelia Xanthe Boscov and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Albert Boscov was the Barnum and Bailey of retail, America's last real merchant, a jumping cheerleader, a philanthropist, a loving family man, and our grandfather. If we had to sum up our grandfather's eighty-seven years with a single phrase, it would be: you get what you give. His father, our great-grandfather, was an immigrant who taught his children that this country gave him an opportunity, and it is their duty to give back, Our grandfather's goal in life was to make his father proud. He grew his father's corner store in Reading, Pennsylvania into the largest (also, smallest) family-owned department store in the nation. His winning philosophy: "Wherever there's a Boscov's, we give back to the community." Before our grandfather passed, the community gave back to hum one last time in a miraculous way. Thousands of letters arrived by mail, email, and Facebook, sending love, prayers, and in those letters, hundreds of stories. Those stories - some silly, some inspiring - inspired us to curate this little book, with a bluebird on the cover. Why the bluebird ? Why the lips? Why so happy? And what do you mean, "Did you Boscov Today?" Inside this book, you'll find out!" -- From the back cover.

Book excerpt: Edge of the Map is equal parts inspiring, dramatic, and heartbreaking. One of America’s greatest high altitude mountaineers, Christine Boskoff was at the top of her career when she and her partner died in an avalanche in 2006. Charismatic, principled, and humble, Boskoff was also a deeply loved role model to her climbing partners and the Sherpa community. Edge of the Map traces the sharp twists and turns in Boskoff’s life, from her early years as a Lockheed engineer, through her first successes in the climbing world, to her purchase of Seattle-based Mountain Madness after owner and climber Scott Fischer died in the 1996 Everest disaster. Her life was one of constant achievement mixed with personal tragedy. The story follows Boskoff as she perseveres and moves on to even bigger peaks, earning acclaim as a world-class mountaineer, then later as she finds an alpine partnership with legendary Colorado climber Charlie Fowler.
