Download or read book Crises and Cycles in Economic Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias written by Daniele Besomi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at investigating from the perspective of the major economic dictionaries the notions of economic crisis and cycle. The project consists in giving an extensive summary of a number of significant entries on this subject, with an introductory essay to each entry placing them (and the dictionary to which they belong) in their context, giving some details on the author of the dictionary entry, and assessing the entry’s (and its author’s) contribution. The broad picture (including the history of these encyclopedic tools) will be examined in the introductory essays.
Download or read book Dictionnaire de science conomique written by Alain Beitone and published by Armand Colin. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Great Nation in Decline written by Sean M. Quinlan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies how doctors responded to - and helped shape - deep-seated fears about nervous degeneracy and population decline in France between 1750 and 1850. It uncovers a rich and far-ranging medical debate in which four generations of hygiene activists used biomedical science to transform the self, sexuality and community in order to regenerate a sick and decaying nation; a programme doctors labelled 'physical and moral hygiene'. Moreover, it is shown how doctors imparted biomedical ideas and language that allowed lay people to make sense of often bewildering socio-political changes, thereby giving them a sense of agency and control over these events. Combining a chronological and thematic approach, the six chapters in this book trace how doctors began their medical crusade during the middle of the Enlightenment, how this activism flowered during the French Revolution, and how they then revised their views during the period of post-revolutionary reaction. The study concludes by arguing that medicine acquired an unprecedented political, social and cultural position in French society, with doctors becoming the primary spokesmen for bourgeois values, and thus helped to define the new world that emerged from the post-revolutionary period.

Download or read book Economics as Rhetoric written by Anne Isla and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard Maris was killed in Paris on January 7, 2015, during the terrorist attack against the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. He remains one of the most original intellectuals of contemporary France, but despite being a uniquely original heterodox thinker, his international reputation has been compromised by the fact that his writings are inaccessible to non-French speakers. This book remedies that. By providing an overview of Bernard Maris’ life and intellectual trajectory as well as an English translation of an anthology of his most relevant writings, this volume provides the international audience – for the first time ever – the chance to know and understand the contribution of this major heterodox economist. An outstanding and atypical figure in economic thought and a virulent critic of mainstream dominant economics, he was also an all-round actor and thinker of his time. Through rigorous reasoning, he questioned the notion of well-being, which, he argued, is too often conflated with having more. Enslavement by work, or the endless destructive accumulation of natural wealth, is also inherent to the capitalist system. Probably his most original contribution is his epistemological reflection on the very nature of economics and his appraisal of this discipline as a form of rhetoric. This book will be of great interest to readers in heterodox economics, economic methodology, epistemology, and French literature and culture more broadly.

Download or read book Civilization and Capitalism 15th 18th Century Vol II written by Fernand Braudel and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992-12-23 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining in detail the material life of pre-industrial peoples around the world, Fernand Braudel significantly changed the way historians view their subject. Originally published in the early 1980s, Civilization traces the social and economic history of the world from the Middle Ages to the Industrial Revolution, although his primary focus is Europe. Braudel skims over politics, wars, etc., in favor of examining life at the grass roots: food, drink, clothing, housing, town markets, money, credit, technology, the growth of towns and cities, and more. Volume I describes food and drink, dress and housing, demography and family structure, energy and technology, money and credit, and the growth of towns.

Download or read book The Jewish Nobel Prize in Economics written by Isaac Benguigui and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most remarkable things about the Jewish people over the last several thousand years has been their creativity in many fields, especially in science. They have also been impressive in their participation in questioning values, dismantling dogmas, and the disruption of hidden forces. We must underscore the fact that the contribution of Jews to science was out of proportion to the percentage of the population that they represent. This remained true in the field of twentieth-century economics. In illustrating the lives and work of these Nobel Prize winners in economics, the author gives us a fascinating story of men, often exiles and of modest origins, whose science was their vocation and the sharing of knowledge their creed.
