Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Moskos showed the way to this particular field of Military Sociology, Dr. George Kaffes, sociologist and teacher for over thirty years in the Hellenic Army Academy, felt the necessity of a first introductive but academic work in order to offer the Dictionary of Military Sociology terms. From the small Greek island of Kastellorizo, where he finished this work, Dr. Kaffes’ goal is to give the opportunity by gathering all these terms, including military sociologists and researchers, some significative military leaders, a small but significative slang vocabulary, and some operational terms to every sociologist whose interest is about military and society to have this very special tool in hands. Another goal of Dictionary of Military Sociology is to show some terms of military slang, which is a colloquial language used by and associated with members of various military forces. About the Author Dr. George Kaffes is a Military Sociologist and has taught Military Sociology as a fulltime professor at the Hellenic Army Academy for more than thirty years. He focuses his research more on sociology of violence and war, sociology of terrorism, gender in the militaries, and army sociology. He is married with one daughter and he speaks more than his mother language, which includes Greek, French, Portuguese, English, and German. His book is destinated to all researchers, militaries, cadets, and everyone who is interested in the field of military sociology.

Book Understanding the Impact of Social Research on the Military

Download or read book Understanding the Impact of Social Research on the Military written by Eyal Ben-Ari and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to chart and evaluate the impact of social research on the military itself. By "impact", the authors in this volume simply mean that which has a marked effect or influence on changing military policy, practices, knowledge, skills, behaviour, or living conditions. The book comprises a series of reflective contributions from scholars who have conducted research on the military as external scholars with no formal ties to the armed forces, as "native" researchers formally linked to them, as well as various kinds of contracted social scientists enabled by the military to carry out their investigations. The authors were asked to make the question of the impact of social scientific research on the armed forces an object of study in itself and to situate their reflections in terms of wider analytical questions. As a result, the chapters can be divided, broadly speaking, into two types of orientation: some are centered on theoretical and analytical issues, while others focus on the researchers’ lived experiences. This book will be of interest to students of military studies, sociology, organisational studies, psychology and political science.

Book The Sociology of Military Science

Download or read book The Sociology of Military Science written by Colonel (US Army Ret.) Chris Paparone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work challenges modernist military science and explores how a more open design epistemology is becoming an attractive alternative to a military staff culture rooted in a monistic scientific paradigm. The author offers fresh sociological avenues to become more institutionally reflexive - to offer a variety of design frames of reference, beyond those typified by modern military doctrine. Modernist military knowledge has been institutionalized to the point that blinds militaries to alternative designs organizationally and in their interventions. This book seeks to reconstruct strategy and operations in "designing ways" and develops theories of action through multifaceted contextualizations and recontextualizations of situations, showing that Military Design does not have to rely on set rational-analytic decision-making schemes, but on seeking alternative meanings in- and on-action. The work offers an alternative philosophy of practice that embraces the unpredictability of tasks to be accomplished. Written by Colonel Paparone (U.S. Army, Ret., PhD) with a special chapter by two active duty officers, it will appeal to all in military and security studies, including professionals and policymakers.
