Book excerpt: Jim Phillips, industriously making himself a master of certain abstruse problems in mathematics, excited the derision of big Bill Brady, chiefly because it was a warm, lazy spring day, and, therefore, as Bill saw it, entirely out of the question for serious work."It's bad enough to have to go out and do baseball practice," said Jim's big catcher. The two were sophomores, and had won fame as the great Yale battery that had humbled every college team with any pretensions to the championship except Harvard. "But I suppose that if we're going to win that series from the boys in the red socks, we've got to do a little practicing."Phillips himself paid no attention, but Harry Maxwell, his former roommate, who had dropped in for a call, was willing enough to talk.

  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Sport written by Eric Dunning and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1972-12-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport is something rather taken for granted and little studied as part of man's and society's behaviour. This collection of essays, many of which appear in print for the first time, provides an international comparative and developmental orientation to the sociology of sport, thereby clarifying the nature of modern sports and their central structural and functional characteristics. The sports treated include football, soccer, rugby, wrestling, baseball, and bull-fighting, and some historical background is given on the development of sport. In the introduction to each section, the editor explains the questions that the selections are intended to illustrate, and treats briefly such matters as theories of sport and play, the social factors in their development, sport and socialization, class and race in sport, sport as an occupation and an industry, and conflict and social control in sport. This reader will be of interest to those professionally concerned, either as teacher or student, with sociology and physical education, but it should also appeal to athletes, sports-lovers, and sports commentators who like to keep their thinking in good shape too.

Book The Astonished Muse

Download or read book The Astonished Muse written by Reuel Denney and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic in communications is also a path-breaking study of American popular culture, combining the thoughtful sympathy of Gilbert Seldes with the critical sensitivity for form of H.L. Mencken. Denney accomplishes this by introducing new approaches to understanding products of popular culture with-out either moralizing over the profit motives of the producers or sermonizing about the base motives of consumers seeking mere entertainment. His forty-page introduction to this new edition is a major statement reexamining the themes in the original 1957 volume. The Astonished Muse analyzes a wide and varied sample of both the active and the passive leisure activities of Americans, ranging from television and science fiction to organized football and skyscraper design. On its initial appearance the book was praised as a work that combines a searching formal analysis of the popular arts with a close historical grasp of their genres and a sociological sense of their audiences. Its themes of critical competence and performance anticipate current concerns with reader-centered and linguistic approaches to popular literature. In an economic-historical sense, this book presages the rise of popular arts and media as rivals in scale to manufacturing industries in the United States. In a political sense, it affirms audience selectivity. Above all it takes a quiet stand against attempts to devalue, decry, and censor the popular arts under banners of morality, childhood inno-cence, puritanical religion, and other limits to free expression.

Book Hoop Crazy

Download or read book Hoop Crazy written by Dennis Gildea and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clair Bee (1896-1983) was a hugely successful basketball coach at Rider College and Long Island University with a 412 and 87 record before his career was derailed in 1951 by a point-shaving scandal. In the trial that sent his star player, Sherman White, to prison, the judge excoriated Bee for creating a morally lax culture that contributed to his players' involvement with gambling. To a certain extent, Bee agreed with the judge's scolding, concluding that coaches, himself included, had become so driven to succeed on the court that they had lost sight of the educational role sports should play. His coaching career effectively over, Bee launched an effort to reform the ills he saw in college sports, and he did so in the pages of the Chip Hilton novels for young readers. He began the series in 1948, but it was the post-scandal books that he used as teaching tools. The books mirrored some of the events of the gambling scandal and were Bee's attempt to reform the problems plaguing college sports. He used his fiction to posit a better sports world that he hoped his young readers would construct and inhabit. The Chip Hilton books were extremely popular and have become a classic series, with over two million copies sold to date. Hoop Crazy is the fascinating story of Clair Bee and his star character Chip Hilton and the ways in which their lives, real and fictional, were intertwined.

Download or read book Frank Merriwell s Support Or A Triple Play written by Burt L. Standish and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the seventh inning, Frank Merriwell's team had not scored, while the Omaha Stars, who had been putting up a hard game against the boys from the East, had made two runs, one in the first inning and one in the fifth. Frank had been pitching a fine game, although his wrist, sprained some time before, had not permitted him to use the double-shoot. In the seventh inning, with the very first ball he pitched, he gave his wrist a twist that sent a shooting pain all the way to his shoulder. The ball went wide of the plate, and the batter did not strike at it. When Bart Hodge returned the ball, he knew something had happened, by the expression on Frank's face.
