Book excerpt: La tipografía y las artes gráficas en general han sido consideradas como una especie de santa hermandad a la que aparentemente solo pertenecían los elegidos. Cómo conseguían los tipógrafos esos bellos resultados en forma de textos o ilustraciones, a veces policromas, sobre un soporte, generalmente papel, es otro de los misterios que han rodeado a la tipografía tradicional, la que avanzó pasito a paso a través de los siglos hasta llegar a nosotros. También los sacerdotes del ritual, es decir, los viejos tipógrafos, los impresores y hasta los encuadernadores aparecían a la vista de muchos como personajes sagrados, mantenedores del rito, trasmisores de la cultura y del saber y realizadores de la maravilla que es todo lo impreso y todo lo encuadernado. Han pasado más de cinco siglos y medio desde la invención de la imprenta y las viejas técnicas gráficas, los sacerdotes de la diosa tipografía y toda su parafernalia han desaparecido de la noche a la mañana como por arte de ensalmo, sin darnos cuenta y sin que sepamos qué ha sido de ellos. Sin embargo, su maravilloso producto, el impreso y el libro, siguen ahí, como si nada hubiera cambiado, como si Gutenberg no hubiera muerto, como si los santones tipógrafos aún siguieran componiendo textos, imprimiéndolos y encuadernándolos, todo ello en el más absoluto de los secretos. En realidad, lo que ha sucedido es que las técnicas se han quintaesenciado, se han perfeccionado hasta extremos que hace solo cien años nadie hubiera podido imaginar. La composición dio un paso de gigante gracias a la linotipia y la monotipia, pero también estas desaparecieron empujadas por la fotocomposición, técnica que ya anunciaba la revolución que en las artes gráficas en general, y en la tipografía en particular, iba a desarrollarse con la aplicación de la informática, no solo a la composición y compaginación (la autoedición), sino a todos los campos de las artes gráficas. Este es el origen de la nueva tipografía y de los nuevos tipógrafos, esos seres informatizados que han sustituido a los viejos tipógrafos y ahora se dedican a construir el impreso y el libro a partir de bases distintas, pero con resultados idénticos. Sin embargo, hay razones para preguntarse si los nuevos tipógrafos están a la altura de sus ilustres antecesores. Con sus herramientas maravillosas, sus todopoderosos programas informáticos, sus veloces ordenadores, ¿mantienen la calidad, la belleza, la estética y hasta la ética de la vieja tipografía? Este Diccionario de edición, tipografía y artes gráficas pretende tender un puente entre la vieja y la nueva tipografía, entre los santones tipográficos y los tipógrafos de la nueva era, de la digitalización. A ello contribuyen sus 480 páginas, 224 figuras (de las cuales 54 son ejemplos de tipos de letras), 6300 entradas (aproximadamente) y 5200 correspondencias francés/inglés-español (también aproximadamente).

Research into homosexuality in Spain is in its infancy. The last ten or fifteen years have seen a proliferation of studies on gender in Spain but much of this work has concentrated on women's history, literature and femininity. In contrast to existing research which concentrates on literature and literary figures, "Los Invisibles" focuses on the change in cultural representation of same-sex activity of through medicalisation, social and political anxieties about race and the late emergence of homosexual sub-cultures in the last quarter of the twentieth century. As such, this book constitutes an analysis of discourses and ideas from a social history and medical history position. Much of the research for the book was supported by a grant from the Wellcome Trust to research the medicalisation of homosexuality in Spain.
