Book Hollywood Highbrow

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shyon Baumann
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-05
  • ISBN : 0691187282
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book Classroom Motivation

Download or read book Classroom Motivation written by Eric M. Anderman and published by Pearson. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniquely structured around the typical daily classroom practices of teachers, Classroom Motivation focuses on the practical applications of motivation research. The book is organized around actual research-based instructional practices that teachers use everyday in their classrooms, like the use of rewards, the grouping of students for learning activities, the nature of academic tasks, and the assessment of student learning. The book also examines the research base behind topics that are appealing to educators, including promoting self-esteem, providing students with autonomy, and holding high expectations. The new edition addresses current issues like high-stakes testing's impact on student motivation and how technology affects student motivation, and it includes even more case-studies of actual classroom teachers and additional applications exercises. From reviews of the book: "The key strengths of this project include: an integrated, pragmatic approach to classroom motivation, valid scientific research, and a wide range of specific strategies and techniques to promote motivation. . . . This work is on-target as far as other texts . . . currently available for my course. Since most of my students are practicing educators, I find that the emphasis on application is invaluable. Students invariably wish to come away from a course with concrete skills. Classroom Motivation not only provides the skills, but the theory behind the skills." --Darren J. Akerman, University of New England "The writing style of this textbook is exceptionally clear. Even the abstract and theoretical content are presented clearly and concisely, and often situated in engaging classroom scenarios that concretely illustrate the theoretical and applied concepts. Because the material is presented so clearly in this book, it would be appropriate for use with learners who come from diverse educational levels and professional backgrounds." --Jeffery Liew, Texas A&M University

Book The Whole Harmonium

Download or read book The Whole Harmonium written by Paul Mariani and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “incandescent….redefining biography of a major poet whose reputation continues to ascend” (Booklist, starred review)—Wallace Stevens, perhaps the most important American poet of the twentieth century. Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) lived a richly imaginative life that he expressed in his poems. “A biography that is both deliciously readable and profoundly knowledgeable” (Library Journal, starred review), The Whole Harmonium presents Stevens within the living context of his times and as the creator of a poetry that continues to shape how we understand and define ourselves. A lawyer who rose to become an insurance-company vice president, Stevens composed brilliant poems on long walks to work and at other stolen moments. He endured an increasingly unhappy marriage, and yet he had his Dionysian side, reveling in long fishing (and drinking) trips to the sun-drenched tropics of Key West. He was at once both the Connecticut businessman and the hidalgo lover of all things Latin. His first book of poems, Harmonium, published when he was forty-four, drew on his profound understanding of Modernism to create a distinctive and inimitable American idiom. Over time he became acquainted with peers such as Robert Frost and William Carlos Williams, but his personal style remained unique. The complexity of Stevens’s poetry rests on emotional, philosophical, and linguistic tensions that thread their way intricately through his poems, both early and late. And while he can be challenging to understand, Stevens has proven time and again to be one of the most richly rewarding poets to read. Biographer and poet Paul Mariani’s The Whole Harmonium “is an excellent, superb, thrilling story of a mind….unpacking poems in language that is nearly as eloquent as the poet’s, and as clear as faithfulness allows” (The New Yorker).
