Book excerpt: Winner of Weatherford Award for Best Poetry Book about Appalachia A poet acclaimed for "uncompromising, honest poems that sound like no one else" (The Rumpus) now offers considerations of the natural world and humans' place within it in ecopoetry of both ambitious reach and elegant refinement Rose McLarney has won attention as a poet of impressive insight, craft, and a "constantly questioning and enlarging vision" (Andrew Hudgins). In her third collection, Forage, she continues to weave together themes she loves: home, heritage, the South, animals, water, the environment. These intricately sequenced poems take up everything from animals' symbolic roles in art and as indicators of ecological change to how water can represent a large, troubled system or the exceptions of smaller, purer tributaries. At the confluence of these poems is a social commentary that goes beyond lamenting environmental degradation and disaster to record--and augment--the beauty of the world in which we live.

  • Pages : 0 pages

Book excerpt: Translated from the Greek by Sarah McCann. Maria Laina's debut English collection. Laina's poems carve symbolically rich images drawn from mythology and the natural world. Rose Fear follows in the Sapphic vein: fragmented, prophetic, and emotionally charged. Sarah McCann in her translations deftly captures the music and the vividness of Laina's scenes, which take their inspiration from regions as diverse as Japan, the Caribbean, and her native Greece. Yet always behind the recognizable world lie the rhythms and lights of the fairytale, the fable, and the spell. "A moving, vivid collection of verse ... The collection's strength lies in its ability to challenge the reader, and its study of time offers new ways of imagining the intangible."--Kirkus Reviews "Like a grim fairytale, Laina's silvery lullaby lyricism morphs into beautifully dark chants and hanging, haikulike scenes as it moves between voices and scraps of stories, complicating and recoloring the feeling of fear itself."--World Literature Today Poetry. Women's Studies. Greek Studies

  • Pages : 138 pages

Download or read book Journal of a Poet written by Jennifer L. Perkins and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal of a Poet: Roses and Ribbons is an account and reflection of high school days, thoughts, journal entries, poetry, essays, and short stories that I originally wrote to document my feelings and perspective on life at that moment in time. I have always enjoyed writing since an early age and have had diaries; however, they did not include much poetry. So I decided to write predominantly poetry in this journal that would repercuss my love for writing rhyme, free verse, sonnets, and even other avenues to express my zealous, hot-blooded, excited, or whimsical state! Though most of the entries are true, there are some fictional depictions in the book like about dating or going to the club. I was seventeen, but I was not allowed to date, furthermore, unable to go to a club of any sort. When I added these fabrications, it was just my imagination roaming free, wondering how these things would actually be like; would I enjoy them...I just calligraphically put myself there as if I was experiencing those things at that particular time. I titled the book The Journal of a Poet: Roses and Ribbons because my cousin Elizabeth Duncan gave me a journal for my birthday. This was in which I wrote in and held very dear to me because she knew I loved to write (and the cover of the journal happened to have rose petals and ribbons everywhere). I wanted to share this with the world. Though it is very personal, I think there is a lot to gain from the book. I hope you enjoy!
