Book Mary E Chase Diary

Download or read book Mary E Chase Diary written by Mary E. Chase and published by . This book was released on 1853 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diary of Mary E. Chase with entries from 16 May 1853 to 6 August 1854. The volume, written at age twenty-five, describes Chase's constant struggle with sadness, misery, and loneliness. She finds solace and happiness in letters from an unknown correspondent, writing her feelings in code. Throughout the volume Chase uses shorthand at times to encode her words when referring to anticipated correspondence from the letter-writer and often when discussing how she feels regarding specific persons or events. She mentions no fear of one of her housemates, Lucy, reading the journal, but possibly one of the others would be inclined. Chase discusses her teaching and her students, some specifically giving her joy and the troubles encountered with others. Her birthday entry notes that the world would describe her as an old maid, but that she doesn't feel that way or care what the world thinks. She travels to see relatives, to events such as the teacher's association meeting, and attends church services most Sundays, with some comments on the sermons. Chase writes of her other interests: singing, quilting, and music lessons. In the last entry she indicates that this is the last page and the last time she will write in this book given to her by a dear friend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photocopies of a manuscript transcript (the date of the transcription and the identity of the transcriber are both unknown) of the diary (1861-1862) of Mary E. Lack. The journal commences on 24 Nov. 1861, and notes major troop movements in the area and interactions with various soldiers from the 18 Mississippi Regiment, including Thomas Magee, John C. Brent (1841-1910), and Edwin G. Banks (1843-1916). Lack recalls the bloody aftermath of the Battle of Ball's Bluff, writing that "the wounded were brought by [her] house, and to hear their groans was awful...great many of the Yankees were drowned." She describes mounting casualties from illness and skirmishes, declaring "there are more than 100 graves in the cemetery now, the graves of those who have died of disease and wounds received on the battle field...I often wonder when it all will end." As well as conveying the tragic consequences of war, Lack's diary also documents ordinary issues and occurrences, such as the slaughtering of livestock and the price of domestic goods. The journal concludes with an entry on 11 Nov. 1862, evincing the hope that her fiancée would be able to join them for Christmas dinner.
