Book excerpt: Diamond Head crater on the south shore of O'ahu represents an icon of powerful visual presence. Throughout time it has served as a sacred space of worship, a tourist icon, and an important fortification for the United States military. The thesis examines the relationships between the real embodied space of Diamond Head and the representational space of its image, proposing Diamond Head as a platform for the projection of power in O'ahu in a way that parallels Hawai'i's larger strategic importance for the projection of U.S. power into the Pacific. The coterminous development of the military and tourism in Hawai'i in the twentieth century traces out shifting conceptions of land broadly and Diamond Head specifically. By focusing attention on the ways in which military violence and touristic leisure flow into one another in Hawai'i with special emphasis on the period from 1893 through World War II, the thesis addresses the pervasive condition and effects of militourism, Teresia Teaiwa's term for mutually supportive militaristic and touristic functioning. Jill Casid's notion of colonial relandscaping is deployed to examine how fantastical representations of Diamond Head circulate and then come to be imposed onto the actual shape of the land. Photographic technology plays a crucial function in this dynamic and is analyzed through the framework of Vilem Flusser's notion of the technical image. Militourism is theorized to operate at the intersection where photographic enchantment and colonial relandscaping meet.
