Download or read book Dutch Chicago written by Robert P. Swierenga and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2002-11-07 with total page 940 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now at least 250,000 strong, the Dutch in greater Chicago have lived for 150 years "below the radar screens" of historians and the general public. Here their story is told for the first time. In Dutch Chicago Robert Swierenga offers a colorful, comprehensive history of the Dutch Americans who have made their home in the Windy City since the mid-1800s. The original Chicago Dutch were a polyglot lot from all social strata, regions, and religions of the Netherlands. Three-quarters were Calvinists; the rest included Catholics, Lutherans, Unitarians, Socialists, Jews, and the nominally churched. Whereas these latter Dutch groups assimilated into the American culture around them, the Dutch Reformed settled into a few distinct enclaves -- the Old West Side, Englewood, and Roseland and South Holland -- where they stuck together, building an institutional infrastructure of churches, schools, societies, and shops that enabled them to live from cradle to grave within their own communities. Focusing largely but not exclusively on the Reformed group of Dutch folks in Chicago, Swierenga recounts how their strong entrepreneurial spirit and isolationist streak played out over time. Mostly of rural origins in the northern Netherlands, these Hollanders in Chicago liked to work with horses and go into business for themselves. Picking up ashes and garbage, jobs that Americans despised, spelled opportunity for the Dutch, and they came to monopolize the garbage industry. Their independence in business reflected the privacy they craved in their religious and educational life. Church services held in the Dutch language kept outsiders at bay, as did a comprehensive system of private elementary and secondary schools intended to inculcate youngsters with the Dutch Reformed theological and cultural heritage. Not until the world wars did the forces of Americanization finally break down the walls, and the Dutch passed into the mainstream. Only in their churches today, now entirely English speaking, does the Dutch cultural memory still linger. Dutch Chicago is the first serious work on its subject, and it promises to be the definitive history. Swierenga's lively narrative, replete with historical detail and anecdotes, is accompanied by more than 250 photographs and illustrations. Valuable appendixes list Dutch-owned garbage and cartage companies in greater Chicago since 1880 as well as Reformed churches and schools. This book will be enjoyed by readers with Dutch roots as well as by anyone interested in America's rich ethnic diversity.

Download or read book A Diamond on the Diamond written by Armendia P. Dixon, PhD and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-02-09 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What an amazing journey it has been! A celebration marking the hundredth anniversary of the dedication of the imposing stone structure overlooking the southern end of Diamond Park in the city of Meadville, Pennsylvania, kicked off on Sunday, March 31, 1968. Marking the occasion, a volume detailing the early years of the Methodist Church in Meadville was produced, putting access to the history of the congregation in easily accessible form. The current volume has been designed to apply that tradition of one-stop accessibility to the subsequent half century. To bring that dream to fruition, a devoted group has devoted countless hours to researching and compiling the years 1968 to 2021. Continuing to build on the kind of firm foundation that grows from an awareness of where Stone United Methodist Church has been, its move into the always unknown future is underway. Greetings, reader! Thank you for joining us in a look back at the past fifty-plus years of the ministry of Stone United Methodist Church. My heartfelt thanks to Dr. Armendia Pierce Dixon for compiling the material and writing the text. Her attention to detail and faithful accounting of events has been invaluable. Thanks also to those who have given of their time, resources, energy, and expertise over these past decades to make possible the ministry you read about in these pages. Honoring our past with confidence, we look to the future while embracing our mission statement: Compelled by God's love, Stone UMC is an inclusive community of faith, meeting people where they are, connecting them with Christ and one another, helping them live as disciples of Jesus Christ. To God be the glory. --Rev. Sarah Daniels Roncolato
Download or read book Under Stately Oaks written by Thomas F. Ruffin and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2006-10-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a captivating blend of photographs and text, Under Stately Oaks showcases over 150 years of Louisiana State University's past, following the evolution of the tiny Seminary of Learning of the State of Louisiana, founded near Pineville in 1853, into a university of well over 30,000 students for the twenty-first century. Thomas F. Ruffin has written an affectionate history of LSU, but it is also an honest one. The notorious scandals of 1939, the university's desegregation struggles, and free-speech alley confrontations during the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War, as well as the football team's 2003 NCAA championship and the university's pivotal role in relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina -- all are chronicled here. From the red pantile roofs and honey-colored stucco of its Italian Renaissance architecture to the "stately oaks and broad magnolias" hailed in the alma mater, the distinct beauty of the LSU campus is unrivaled. The history of the state's flagship university is as colorful as the azaleas that adorn its landscape every spring. Its first superintendent, William Tecumseh Sherman, later opposed its first faculty member and future president, David F. Boyd, in war. Yet both also fought for an LSU curriculum that embraced a liberal education with a classical component. When LSU lost its state funding during the 1870s, it was Boyd who maneuvered a merger with Louisiana A&M College, a move that ensured LSU's survival and preserved its identity. In the 1930s, Huey Long demanded the best for LSU on many fronts, and by the mid-twentieth century the institution was not only the state's premier university but also nationally recognized for its prestigious faculty and cutting-edge research. This newly updated edition features a foreword by Chancellor Sean O'Keefe and a final chapter entitled "The 21st Century and Beyond," which details the concrete steps LSU has taken towards fulfilling its goal of becoming a nationally competitive flagship institution. The last chapter also portrays, in text and striking photographs, the central role LSU played in emergency relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina, and examines how the university is faring in the post-Katrina world. Under Stately Oaks captures the spirit of the university as never before. Though the book shows that much has changed over the years, it is primarily a celebration of the timeless aspects of the LSU experience and a compelling testimony to the university's ongoing commitment to progress.
Download or read book Village of Unsettled Yearnings written by Leonard Neufeldt and published by TouchWood Editions. This book was released on 2002 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concensus and dissent, persistence and rapid change were at the heart of Yarrow's rich cultural life. These tensions, especially the inevitability of assimilation, walked hand in hand with the young pioneer settlers born in Russia and the next generation born in Canada. There was no possibility that the new generation would be absorbed into a Russian colony ethos or would move elsewhere in order to perpetuate it. Those who grew up in the early years of this community cannot go home again save in memory; the memories of a way of life and its webs of relationships and their meanings will probably die with that generation or those just a few years younger. "Village of Unsettled Yearnings" harnesses these memories to the surviving records and gives words to them.

Download or read book Palliative Care for Care Homes written by Christine Reddall and published by Radcliffe Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Care home workers increasingly work with people nearing the end of their lives, including people with medically complex conditions. However, many do not have a medical background and find that practical advice on how to address these people's very specific needs is scarce. In this book, Christine Reddall draws on almost four decades of nursing experience to create a clear and easy-to-read handbook primarily for workers caring for the dying in care homes, but which will also be of interest to family members caring for relatives with life-threatening conditions.'This is a resource book to provide information on palliative care. It is designed primarily to help carers who work in care homes of all categories. To my knowledge, this is the first book written solely for carers working in care homes that addresses the issues of caring for someone with palliative care needs. However, people with whom I have spoken to about this book, or who have read parts of it, have all said that it would also be a helpful resource to non-professional family carers who care for a family member in their own home. The style of this book is designed to be readable by all levels of carers, and I have endeavoured to keep the language and text as 'non-medical' as possible. I have tried to put myself in the shoes of carers, especially those without medical training, and think of what they want to know when caring for someone with a life threatening illness' - Christine Reddall in her Preface.
