Excerpt: ...is not of our body, but a townsman, and licensed by them to keep an inn. I have complained to the Lords about him, and hope there will be a letter go from the Board to the town to call for an account of the whole business. One of the charges against Laud, made by Prynne, the great Parliamentary lawyer, was that his chaplain, Morgan Owen, had set up images of the Virgin and Child, holding a small crucifix, over the new south porch of St. Marys, which he had built at a cost of 230Z., in lieu, it is said, of a Latin sermon. They still keep at Lambeth the very copy of Prynnes Canterburys Doom which Charles I. read, with the clear bold Bum spiro spero, C.R., written on the fly-leaf by the King himself. Hobbes notes how much the doctrine and method of the University contributed to the troubles, and Prynne had cruel wrongs to remember. In 1635 the Caroline charter confirmed the privileges of the University, and their rights over the city, notwithstanding a protest from the citizens; but Laud kept vigilant watch over the city. His History of his Chancellorship supplies full details. He got a letter from the Council, ordering the demolition of the cottages erected upon the town ditch and the town wall, the back way towards the Castle, and in the middle of the street by Trinity College gate, and near a place called Smithgate. Pulling down the cottages made Smithgate passable for coaches. And by his own proclamation he named a toll-gatherer for the market, which office hath of late times been discontinued; by reason whereof divers citizens, inhabiting in or near the corn market, have taken upon them to keep and set forth on market days public bushels and measures for the measuring of corn and grain, and take toll for the same...

Book De Radicalization in the Mediterranean

Download or read book De Radicalization in the Mediterranean written by Lorenzo Vidino and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years, the MENA region witnessed a rise in jihadist extremism and radicalization, as countries in the area were rocked by a series of deadly terrorist attacks. As authorities responded to the threat, it became clear that in order to effectively counter the phenomenon, traditional repressive measures had to now be accompanied by alternative methods of prevention, rehabilitation and dissuasion. How have different governments around the Mediterranean responded? What sort of alternative measures have been taken? How effective have these policies been? What further steps can be taken to strengthen the response of the authorities? These are just some of the key issues that this ISPI Report seeks to cover. The experts in this volume illustrate the policies of contrast, prevention and de-radicalization that have been adopted by countries in the MENA region, revealing emerging trends, lessons learned and overviews of this security status.

Book Islamic Philosophy and Occidental Phenomenology in Dialogue

Download or read book Islamic Philosophy and Occidental Phenomenology in Dialogue written by Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions, composed in this volume, are inspired not only by the necessity but also by the potentialities of a process which continues and deepens cross-cultural understanding, especially between Islamic and Western philosophy. Following the tradition of an East-Western symphony of thoughts, the authors focus on common horizons and while applying comparative and historical approaches, varieties of unity appear on the ways towards a New Enlightenment. The creative force, orchestrating the harmony in the web of Life, communicates in the mean time with the capacities of human beings, advancing in deciphering its micro-macrocosmic dimensions. Here, the encounter of the Logos of Life Philosophy (A-T. Tymieniecka) and Islamic Philosophy open the space for constructive disputation. In the wake of the crisis of postmodern unknowability, paths towards a new critique of reason go hand in hand with fundamental issues, being reflected newly.

This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From antiquity until the present, libraries have served to witness cultural and religious exchanges between civilizations. A number of famous libraries have often acted as the cornerstones of the history of humankind in all its diversity. In 2014, in addition to the world congress of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), satellite meetings were held in Paris. The theme of these meetings was “Libraries at the Heart of Dialogue of Cultures and Religions”. The presentations centred around three aspects: “Religious Libraries and History,” “Anticipating and Facing Urgent Issues,” and “New Technologies and Networking to Solve Some Issues.” The publication of these proceedings allows to draw up a panorama of the questions raised by these themes, highlight some initiatives, and offer solutions or lines of thought to professionals and Library and Information Science students.

Book Islam and Christianity

Download or read book Islam and Christianity written by Jean Jacques Waardenburg and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of studying past and present relationships between Islam and Christianity as well as between Muslims and Christians of different persuasions has now become generally recognized. The present volume of scholarly studies focusses on changes which have occurred in these relationships during the last forty years. The papers examine new Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox views of Islam and a broad variety of views of Christianity held by Muslims from India, Iran, North Africa, and the Near East, including some "fundamentalist" authors in Egypt and Lebanon. The book contains a moving testimony from a Muslim intellectual in Sarajevo written during the siege of the city. Nearly all contributions were discussed at the Cret Berard (Switzerland) symposium in April 1995.

Book Ethics and Spirituality in Islam

Download or read book Ethics and Spirituality in Islam written by Francesco Chiabotti and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of adab is at the heart of Arab-Islamic culture. Born in the crucible of the Arabic and Persian civilization, nourished by Greek and Indian influences, this polysemic notion could cover a variegated range of meanings: good behavior, knowledge of manners, etiquette, rules and belles-lettres and finally, literature. This collection of articles tries to explore how the formulations and reformulations of adab during the first centuries of Islam engage with the crucial period of the first great spiritual masters, exploring the importance of normativity, but also of transgression, in order to define the rules themselves. Assuming that adab is ethics, the articles analyse the genres of Sufi adab, including manuals and hagiographical accounts, from the formative period of Sufism until the modernity. Book Diaspora diplomacy

Download or read book Diaspora diplomacy written by Ayca Arkilic and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 2000s, Turkey has shown an unprecedented interest in its diaspora. This book provides the first in-depth examination of the institutionalisation of Turkey's diaspora engagement policy since the Justice and Development Party's rise to power in 2002, the Turkish diaspora's new role as an agent of diplomatic goals, and how Turkey's growing sphere of influence affects intra-diaspora politics and diplomatic relations with Europe. The book is based on fieldwork in Turkey, France and Germany, and interviews conducted with diaspora organisation leaders and policymakers. Diasporas have become transformative for relations at the state-to-state level and blur the division between the domestic and the foreign. A case study of Turkey's diasporas is significant at a time when emigrants from Turkey form the largest Muslim community in Europe and when issues of diplomacy, migration and citizenship have become more salient than ever.
