Book excerpt: The first modern edition of Lodovico Dolce’s Dialogo della instituzion delle donne, originally published in Venice in 1545 with the printing presses of Gabriele Giolito. A vernacular translation and adaptation (or plagiarism, according to some) of the 1538 edition of the De institutione foeminae Christianae by the Spanish humanist Juan Luis Vives, the Dialogo was one of the most successful works on female conduct written in sixteenth-century Italy. Dolce transformed Vives’s didactic treatise into a dialogue, in which Flaminio teaches the widow Dorotea rules of conduct for the three stages of lay women’s lives, that is, as unmarried girls, married women, and widows. Whilst indebted to its Latin source in terms of the ideas and precepts presented, and the many exempla used to substantiate them, Dolce’s Dialogo is nevertheless also new and original. In the lively publishing market of the time, the fruitful collaboration between Dolce and Giolito targeted new circles of readers, including women, who were not necessarily familiar with Latin, and who welcomed translations and adaptations into the vernacular such as this. Contents include: a historical introduction to the author, his time, and his work; the Italian text with notes; a bibliography; an index of names.

Giannetti argues that the comedic dialogue and cross-dressing characters so prevalent in Italian Renaissance comedies played with the presuppositions of the day and engaged with contemporary social norms, expectations, and desires. Cross-dressing female characters reveal the relativity of sex and gender roles, and also present a vision of female empowerment. At the same time, cross-dressing male characters suggest a unique perception of the male life cycle that was more uncertain and contested than often assumed, and show more broadly how masculinity was also socially and culturally constructed. In discussing marriage, sexuality, and gender roles, the comedies deploy a social scripting that not only reflects and comments on the everyday life of the time, but also interacts with it with playful humor and revealing insight.

Book excerpt: Vives' tract on the eduction of women, De Institutione Feminae Christianae (1524, revised 1538) became a model for conduct books in various Protestant traditions and as such has always been of interest to historians of education. However, the treatise also made a very important contribution to the querelle des femmes of its time and has consequently generated much interest among modern historians of women and gender. It consists of 3 books, one for each stage of woman's life - maidenhood, marriage and widowhood. The only English translation of the text on offer till now was the inaccurate and free version of Richard Hyrde (a friend of Thomas More), published early in the 10th century by Foster Watson, but now unavailable. This edition offers a new Latin text with a double apparatus and a facing-page English translation with notes, with an introduction to the edition and the text. Volume I (1996) contains Book I, volume 2 covers Books II-III.
