The HRW model has been in development at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, formerly U.S. Army Atmospheric Sciences Laboratory, since 1978. This model is a two-dimensional, diagnostic atmospheric surface-layer wind model with a horizontal grid spacing of the order of 100 m over a domain of about 5 by 5 km. It uses Gauss? principle of least constraint and a direct variational relaxation method to adjust an initially uniform wind field to conform with topography, mass conservation, and buoyancy forces. A distinctive feature of the model is the use of a non-orthogonal, terrain following, warped coordinate system. A valuable observational dataset of surface wind has been provided from the field study of Meteorology and Diffusion Over Non-Uniform Areas (MADONA) at Porton Down, Salisbury, England during September and October 1992. Using the MADONA data, a critical evaluation for the HRW model for 39 cases has been carried out. The results of this study are presented, indicating both the range of validity and the limitations of the HRW model.

Book excerpt: A regional-scale data base, consisting of wind and temperature data for June and July of 1977, was developed for the greater San Francisco Bay Area and eastward to the Central Valley. Continuous meteorological measurements were made in the area of a windy pass (Patterson Pass) 3 km east of Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. This area was chosen because of its complex terrain and importance as a downwind topographic feature affecting the dispersal of possible accidental atmospheric releases from the Laboratory and as an area of high wind-energy potential. The results of this study provided the following: (1) a data base, including over 50 stations for use in numerical wind-field regional-scale-model validation; (2) characterization of summer sea breese oscillations of approx. 6 and 12 days (this analysis is useful in calculating wind-power persistence and in understanding summer sea-breeze mechanisms in the Bay Area); and (3) successful application of an optical space-averaging wind sensor over a 1-km path across a pass to provide long-path averaged data more suitable for regional, numerical wind-field models with kilometre-size grid elements.

The model determines locally generated slope and valley winds as well as mechanically affected changes in the general wind due to sheltering, diverting, ridge enhancement, and separated flow. A procedure is also given for the generation of an optimal computation grid on which the wind field is computed. Winds calculated on this optimal, and usually uneven grid, may then be interpolated by the model to a uniform grid specified by the user. The model is designed to compute wind fields without the need for surface observations. Analysis areas are arbitrary, ranging from as small as 1 sq km to as large as 50 sq km.
