Como mecanismo de vigilancia del organismo, sirven para alertar ante el menor peligro desempeñando, así, un papel protector en la preservación del individuo y de la especie. Por ello, las respuestas de ansiedad —dentro de ciertos límites— son más un signo de salud que una señal de enfermedad, aunque en ocasiones las respuestas de ansiedad no desempeñan una función adaptativa, se disparan de forma totalmente descontrolada y son causa de sufrimiento para los niños que las experimentan. Son pocos los textos que se ocupan específicamente de este tema; sin embargo, es muy importante dada la incidencia de estos trastornos y el número de limitaciones que provoca en la vida cotidiana del niño afectado. Los autores han extendido la temática abordada en esta obra al ámbito de la adolescencia. Se ha adaptado la clasificación de los trastornos de ansiedad a la última versión del DSM (DSM-IV-TR, 2000), si bien se han incorporado cuadros clínicos, como el trastorno mixto de ansiedad y depresión, que tienen una gran significación clínica en la infancia y en la adolescencia que no figuran en este sistema de clasificación. Se incluye un apartado específico dedicado al trastorno de estrés postraumático porque se cuenta con conocimientos de los que se carecía hace unos años. Asimismo, se facilitan algunos instrumentos de evaluación y una descripción del programa integral cognitivo-conductual de Kendall para el tratamiento de la ansiedad generalizada, y se hace una revisión de los tratamientos psicofarmacológicos actuales.
