Book Urban Cooperation and Climate Governance

Download or read book Urban Cooperation and Climate Governance written by Jan Beermann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Beermann addresses persistent research gaps in urban climate governance and North-South cooperation. He compares the form, processes and outcomes of four local climate protection projects conducted as part of German-Indian urban cooperation and explores the conditions associated with the success and/or failure in these initiatives. The study concludes that North-South city partnerships struggle to fully realise their potential to foster global climate protection efforts, specifically in terms of post-project sustainability, multi-level governance coordination, and mutuality. On the basis of these findings, practical policy recommendations on how to maximise the outcomes and broaden the scope of urban climate cooperation are provided.

Book A Nexus Approach for Sustainable Development

Download or read book A Nexus Approach for Sustainable Development written by Stephan Hülsmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how integrated management of environmental resources via a nexus approach can help in achieving the respective Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It provides conceptual considerations but mainly practical examples on how to implement a nexus approach in cities and multifunctional land-use systems to increase resource use efficiency and develop a low carbon economy. After sketching out the background and conceptual outline, contributions to the book explore key aspects of the nexus implementation. Specifically, they • Demonstrate how to sustainably use organic waste and wastewater for agriculture, • Explore examples on how to manage multifunctional land-use systems including multipurpose reservoirs, • Highlight the importance of economic incentives for successful nexus implementation, and • Provide a comprehensive perspective on challenges and opportunities of implementation, considering peer-to-peer learning, indigenous knowledge, and stakeholder participation. The chapters in this book shed a new light on key aspects of the interrelation between SDGs and the nexus approach in resilient cities and multifunctional land-use systems, and provide specific examples on how to advance sustainable resources management.

Book Transforming Water Management in South Africa

Download or read book Transforming Water Management in South Africa written by Barbara Schreiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-10 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the early set of reforms that South Africa embarked on after emerging from apartheid was in the water sector, following a remarkable, consultative process. The policy and legal reforms were comprehensive and covered almost all aspects of water management including revolutionary changes in defining and allocating rights to water, radical reforms in water management and supply institutions, the introduction of the protection of environmental flows, and major shifts in charging for water use and in the provision of free basic water. Over ten years of implementation of these policy and legislative changes mean that valuable lessons have already been learned and useful experiences gained in the challenge of effective water resources management and water services provision in a middle income country.

Book New sanitation techniques in the development cooperation

Download or read book New sanitation techniques in the development cooperation written by Ulrich Menter and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research interest can be defined in two steps. One is to economically evaluate the effectiveness of techniques because hundreds of projects were already implemented. The question needs to be raised to see which of the applied techniques is the most effective. An additional research interest occurred during the first research step when it was found that there were no significant economical differences in effectiveness between the techniques. If the technique does not necessarily determine a project’s effectiveness, then it is necessary to analyze other measurements and circumstances in a project‘s implementation to figure out the cause of its success.

  • Author : Kelly D. Alley
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2023
  • ISBN : 0520394305
  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book Microbial Machines written by Kelly D. Alley and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 2004, members of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, science institutes, and private companies throughout India began brainstorming and then experimenting with small-scale treatment systems that could produce usable water from wastewater. Through detailed case studies, Microbial Machines describes how residents, workers, and scientists interact with technology, science, and engineering during the processes of treatment and reuse. Using a human-machine-microbe framework, Kelly Alley explores the ways that people's sensory perceptions of water--including disgust--are dynamic and how people use machines and microbes to digest wastewater. A better understanding of how the human and nonhuman interact in these processes will enable people to generate more effective methods for treating and reusing wastewater. While decentralized wastewater treatment systems may not be a perfect solution, they alleviate resource stress in regions that are particularly hard hit by climate change. These case studies have broad relevance for solving similar problems in many other places around the world.
