Book excerpt: Excerpt from Devotions From Ancient and Medieval Sources In other words, the object of the book throughout is not scientific, but practical; not to furnish exact translations of liturgical texts, but to assist devotion. Hence I have not scrupled to modify the texts translated where it seemed to me de sirable to do so. In ninety-nine cases out of a hundred the modification consists merely in omission. In some cases the omission was dictated by the feeling that the things omitted were at variance with the teaching or practice of the English Church, but in the majority of cases it has been due simply to a desire for brevity and compression. Many of the Moz arabic prayers in particular are, in the original. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Domestic Devotions in Medieval and Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Domestic Devotions in Medieval and Early Modern Europe written by Salvador Ryan and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic devotion has become an increasingly important area of research in recent years, with the publication of a number of significant studies on the early modern period in particular. This Special Issue aims to build on these works and to expand their range, both geographically and chronologically. This collection focuses on lived religion and the devotional practices found in the domestic settings of late medieval and early modern Europe. More particularly, it investigates the degree to which the experience of personal or familial religious practice in the domestic realm intersected with the more public expression of faith in liturgical or communal settings. Its broad geographical range (spanning northern, southern, central and eastern Europe) includes practices related to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This Special Issue will be of interest to historians, art historians, medievalists, early modernists, historians of religion, anthropologists and theologians, as well as those interested in the history of material religious culture. It also offers important insights into research areas such as gender studies, histories of the emotions and histories of the senses.

Book Domestic Devotions in the Early Modern World

Download or read book Domestic Devotions in the Early Modern World written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-12-10 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sets out to explore the world of domestic devotions and is premised on the assumption that the home was a central space of religious practice and experience throughout the early modern world. The contributions to this book, which deal with themes dating from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, tell of the intimate relationship between humans and the sacred within the walls of the home. The volume demonstrates that the home cannot be studied in isolation: the sixteen essays, that encompass religious history, the histories of art and architecture, material culture, literary history, and social and cultural history, instead point individually and collectively to the porosity of the home and its connectedness with other institutions and broader communities. Contributors: Dotan Arad, Kathleen Ashley, Martin Christ, Hildegard Diemberger, Marco Faini, Suzanna Ivanič, Debra Kaplan, Marion H. Katz, Soyeon Kim, Hester Lees-Jeffries, Borja Franco Llopis, Alessia Meneghin, Francisco J. Moreno Díaz del Campo, Cristina Osswald, Kathleen M.
