    Book Details:

  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book Cultures of Devotion written by Frank Graziano and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish America has produced numerous "folk saints" -- venerated figures regarded as miraculous but not officially recognized by the Catholic Church. Some of these have huge national cults with hundreds -- perhaps millions -- of devotees. In this book Frank Graziano provides the first overview in any language of these saints, offering in-depth studies of the beliefs, rituals, and devotions surrounding seven representative figures. These case studies are illuminated by comparisons to some hundred additional saints from contemporary Spanish America. Among the six primary cases are Difunta Correa, at whose shrines devotees offer bottles of water and used auto parts in commemoration of her tragic death in the Argentinean desert. Gaucho Gil is only one of many gaucho saints, whose characteristic narrative involves political injustice and Robin-Hood crimes on behalf of the exploited people. The widespread cult of the Mexican saint Nino Fidencio is based on faith healing performed by devotees who channel his powers. Nino Compadrito is an elegantly dressed skeleton of a child, whose miraculous powers are derived in part from an Andean belief in the power of the skull of one who has suffered a tragic death. Graziano draws upon site visits and extensive interviews with devotees, archival material, media reports, and documentaries to produce vivid portraits of these fascinating popular movements. In the process he sheds new light on the often fraught relationship between orthodox Catholicism and folk beliefs and on an important and little-studied facet of the dynamic culture of contemporary Spanish America.

Book The Bible in the Literary Imagination of the Spanish Golden Age

Download or read book The Bible in the Literary Imagination of the Spanish Golden Age written by Terence O'Reilly and published by St. Joseph's University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book has been written in the conviction that in order to understand and appreciate the literary culture of the Spanish Golden Age, we need to refine and extend our awareness of how the Christian Bible was read, interpreted, and transmitted in the society of the time. It is not, however, a study of the reception of the Bible in the Catholic Monarchy, nor does it consider in detail the biblical scholarship in which the Golden Age excelled. Its focus is instead the literature and art of the age, which it approaches by examining closely a selection of remarkable texts and paintings produced in Spain between the times of Columbus and Velázquez."--Preface, p. xv.

Book Painting and Devotion in Golden Age Iberia

Download or read book Painting and Devotion in Golden Age Iberia written by Jean Andrews and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luis de Morales, known as El Divino because of his intensely religious subject matter, is the most significant and recognisable Spanish painter of the mid-sixteenth century, the high point of the Spanish and Portuguese counter-reformations. He spent almost his entire working life in the Spanish city of Badajoz, not far from the border with Portugal, and did not travel outside of a small area around that city, straddling the border. The social, political and cultural environment of Badajoz and its environs is crucial for a thorough understanding of Morales’s output, and this book provides context in detail – considering literature and liturgical theatre, the situation of converted Jews and Muslims, the presence of Erasmianism, Lutheranism and Illuminism (Alumbradismo), devotional writing for lay people, and proximity to the Bragança ducal palace in Portugal as a means of explaining this most enigmatic of painters.
